It's going to take quite a while to reach the same size as part 1 I quess :-) Btw, there are more keybindings now in CVS, I just added them to the get-e.org user guide (3.1 section). This was the last major thing I've been missing \o/ Now my main wishlist item is a CPU/Network/Process/etc module heh.

Is the CVS broken atm?

I've not been able to emerge it for three days running now, all breaking at different points.
Getting there....

I recompiled this morning without any problems, so I don't think cvs is broken, or at least not for that long.

You might want to think about moving the distfile/cvs-src/e17 to another spot at then emerging everything so that you get a clean install if your having some problems. If that doesn't work, feel free to post the problems.

John

EDIT: I never really used keybindings before and I wanted to test them out. Could anyone post which keybinds go to what command so we don't have to look at the code for them.

I've updated everything two times in the last 3 days, previously today morning. Worked fine. Perhaps you need to empty /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src.

hmm, when I boot my PC, entrance doesn't run. Instead I get a xdm login. Typing "entranced start" in the console makes entrance start up, but I can't seem to work out why it won't do it auto on boot, instead of showing me the xdm login :( AFAIK everything is set up correctly in rc.conf. Any ideas?

I know it can work from the initd script for xdm, because I needed a bootable cd to fix my system (had bad entrance config file). are you sure that you have the right values in the config files? In rc.conf I have

Code: Select all

DISPLAYMANAGER="entrance"

Just out of curiosity, how often do you guys rebuild e17? I created a basic script (rebuild_e17), which is basicall

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# cat /usr/bin/rebuild_e17
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/emerge edb eet imlib2 imlib2_loaders evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl engrave entice entrance eclair e engage erss e_utils e_modules
with a chmod of 700.... Good or bad idea?

Emerged just now. Works great, except my keyboard doesn't work. X detects them and posts a line to the console for every key press, but nothing works in E.

Oh well.

I've got 3 scripts (even more basic) which won't do anything to the e17 apps as those have nothing to do with the libs. I only recompile those if there's a need to.

The first one is backup-e17.sh (yes... things can go wrong) and I issue it before updating e17:

Code: Select all

quickpkg edb && quickpkg eet && quickpkg imlib2 && quickpkg imlib2_loaders && quickpkg evas && quickpkg ecore && quickpkg epeg && quickpkg epsilon && quickpkg embryo && quickpkg edje && quickpkg esmart && quickpkg emotion && quickpkg etox && quickpkg ewl && quickpkg engrave && quickpkg e
I simply issue that with # sh backup-e17.sh . After I now have a working binaries I issue the second script called update-e17:

Code: Select all

emerge edb eet imlib2 imlib2_loaders evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl engrave e
issued by # sh update-e17 . If all goes well I have a newly built e17 which I backup before the next update. If it doesn't go well... I have a third script called downgrade-e17:

Code: Select all

emerge -K edb eet imlib2 imlib2_loaders evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl engrave e
which I issue with # sh downgrade-e17 and after it's done I'm back to where I started.
If someone solves a problem for you say thanks... and put [SOLVED] in the title!

Yes, I have that. Are there any log files that an error message would be in that I could check?

This script is waaaay to much. Why not shortening it to:

Code: Select all

for foo in edb eet imlib2 imlib2_loaders evas ecore epeg epsilon embryo edje esmart emotion etox ewl engrave e;do quickpkg ${foo};done
cheers

Sorry for my english , i'm french

I had this error because of a previous install without portage and the script installs some headers files to /usr/local/include and in the others directories in /usr/local/
Delete E related files in this directory (/usr/local/*) and re-emerge E from scratch ;)

Can't help you with that problem, other than that check that you don't have 2 installations of any library, empty /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src and compile all EFL / E17 stuff again in the correct order. The lude.net/edocs link on your signature is outdated btw. That page no longer exists.

Can't help you with that problem, other than that check that you don't have 2 installations of any library, empty /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src and compile all EFL / E17 stuff again in the correct order. The lude.net/edocs link on your signature is outdated btw. That page no longer exists.
Ok, I'll do that. I've also updated my signature.

Can one of you post the contents of your /etc/init.d/xdm file please? I think my problem is that I've got something wrong with mine. :)

Code: Select all

#!/sbin/runscript
# Copyright 1999-2004 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, v2
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/x11-base/xfree/files/4.3.99.8/xdm.start,v 1.1 2003/07/11 22:54:09 spyderous Exp $

# This is here to serve as a note to myself, and future developers.
#
# Any Display manager (gdm,kdm,xdm) have the following problem: if
# it is started before any getty, and no vt is specified, it will
# usually run on vt2. When the getty on vt2 then starts, and the
# DM is already started, the getty will take control of the keyboard,
# leaving us with a "dead" keyboard.
#
# Resolution: add the following line to /etc/inittab
#
#  x:a:once:/etc/X11/startDM.sh
#
# and have /etc/X11/startDM.sh start the DM in daemon mode if
# a lock is present (with the info of what DM should be started),
# else just fall through.
#
# How this basically works, is the "a" runlevel is a additional
# runlevel that you can use to fork processes with init, but the
# runlevel never gets changed to this runlevel. Along with the "a"
# runlevel, the "once" key word means that startDM.sh will only be
# run when we specify it to run, thus eliminating respawning
# startDM.sh when "xdm" is not added to the default runleve, as was
# done previously.
#
# This script then just calls "tellinit a", and init will run
# /etc/X11/startDM.sh after the current runlevel completes (this
# script should only be added to the actual runlevel the user is
# using).

Great news on the keybindings. Are they configurable and can the global ones be removed (as in the alt+drag window to move it etc - these interfere with 3d programs I use :D )

These issues were all that was stopping me updating and doing some theme work for it.

Cheers,

Alan.

They aren't configurable yet, except by editing the source code. Check e_bindings.c - it's fairly simple even if you don't know C, at least the basic things like changing control + alt + x to control + alt + y or something similar.

If I replace that with:

Code: Select all

                entrance*)
                        EXE="/usr/sbin/entranced"
                        ;;
It works fine. Seems that the "$(which entranced)" bit isn't working :( At least I can get it to work now, although it's not the perfect solution :)

Hmm, and is anyone else having problems running full screen apps? I can run say ut2004 or ET, but the mouse locks up as soon as it goes fullscreen. This started happening after I got the latest cvs yesterday.

last cvs commit I saw concerning full screen claimed it was "kind of working"... so my guess is that full screen still isn't fully functioning yet.

Aha. :) My "which" is indeed borked. Segfaults when I try to use it. Now to fix it...
