If you know someone near you with a good upstream (I have 2 such people on the network with me who have WoW) you can just dl it. Failing that, I'm sure a win32 user with a DVD-R wouldn't mind terribly burning off a copy for you (probably for the cost of shipping and the DVD). These are, of course, cheap work-arounds, and I'm only mentioning them because I'm about to try the form where I just grab a fresh copy of WoW from a friend on the network.
Wouldn't that prevent you from both going online at the same time? If the serial number is stored in the MPQ files (as with starcraft) you will end up using his serial number when logging in.

the serial number is associated with the account not with the install
ie if you reinstall you do not have to enter your s/n again

but good thought

True, copying the files is guaranteed to work. Just make sure to save your WTF directory so that you don't lose all your settings.

ikataii: Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that you're running 20050310 and have those dlls?

Everyone else: Try the net installer for mozilla. And make sure you're using the right wine version with the dlls.

EDIT: Just updated appdb with the new version info. Whoever submitted the "1.4.1" version, it isn't out yet. Either that or I'm playing the wrong game.

I'm experiencing problems similar (or the same) to(/as) ikataii.
This is with an about one week old cvs wine + try6.
Now I'm going to try with a clean wine(from cvs today) + try6 + clean drive_c.
Wish me luck :)

It seems to work for me. I've successfully installed the english version of the european patch (via dlls from dll-files.com and the mozilla stuff). I haven't played though, since the european servers are still down, but I made it to the realms list.
The only thing that remains is to thank you Darckness!

I got it to work :)

here's how i did it:

1. installed wine from cvs (today) with try6

2. installed mozilla 1.7.7 (zip file) to .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/mozilla

3. wine mozilla.exe -- didnt work, outputted same or similar error as i got before with mozilla installer, fixed by changing windows version from winxp to win95.

4. installed MozillaControl177.exe

5. started the patch, it worked :)

6. switched back to winxp and started wow, it worked :)

If you are having problems to patch WoW to 1.4 even if you have followed Darckness's guide, this might help you.

The problem is that you have messed your c_drive or wine config file somehow.
1. Rename your .wine directory (in your home directory) to something like wine-old
2. Run wine without any parameters or anything and it will recreate .wine directory with all the configs and clean c_drive (don't bother tweaking configs unless you are going to keep using the clean .wine directory)
3. Copy msvcp60.dll and mfc42.dll to .wine/c_drive/System (like Darckness told)
4. Install Windows version of Firefox and then Mozilla ActiveX control using wine (like Darckness told)
5. Patching should work now so do so by running "wine WoW-1.3.1.4297-to-1.4.0-enGB-patch.exe" in your WoW installation directory
6. Remove .wine and rename wine-old to .wine (unless you want to keep the clean .wine directory)

There, WoW should be patched to 1.4 and working like before (servers aren't up yet in here Europe...).

I used wine-20050310-r1 which I patched with try-6 patch on the fly during emerging. Hope this helps, and one more thank you for Darckness from me :D

PS: Hmm, a "rival" guide appeared as I typed this... :D

I just want to kudos Darckness. You are doing a great job. I used cedega and now I use wine, mainly by your support because I don't see any difference in performance between them (except for sometimes wine has a little graphic glitch and my char appears nude 8O )

I play in the Europe servers and there the patches seem to come at least a few days later so with your help I'm usually already prepared when they come.

Glad everyone is getting things working. I'll most likely update the actual howto within the next couple days if nobody reports any major issues.

This is by no means confirmed, but I suspect we'll be seeing a considerable amount of opengl work in the coming days/weeks.

EDIT: Also, I'm hoping for another thread split here, so don't be alarmed if you can't post to the thread for a short period of time today.

Darckness great support it worked flawlessly

Amd64 + Nvidia card.
before: I was using wine-20050310 with fixwow and fb2.
30 minutes later: wine-20050419 + fb6, copied the 2 dlls from my brother winxp/sytem32, installed mozilla 1.7.7 and the activex. Copied the patch and the installer from my brother computer while i was emerging wine. WoW worked, patched without problems (although I couldn't see the patch log) and playing it now perfectly.

let's rock some allies

Darckness for President!

Post by thanqu0l » Fri Apr 22, 2005 7:15 pm

Thanqs Darckness!

b.t.w. I've read earlier that there are sound problems running under wine... I must say that I do NOT have any issues at all (well the circle around the selected enemy, but thats an totaly Blizzard issue)

Gaming under Linux - greater performance! :)

Hope they will learn that its time to give Linux users their own native client!

Thanks chap,

winver of win95 is the key to getting mozilla to install if you run across the previously mentioned error. Just for completeness, if you set winver to win95, you can use the installer too.

Full screen

Post by Ariakus » Sat Apr 23, 2005 10:44 am

Hello,

I also could not patch, had to go to windows to patch the client.

I play the game in full screen in one monitor, and have a normal desktop at a second one. I can't find a way to go from wow in monitor 1, to desktop in monitor 2, do you guys have any idea that will allow me to change from wow ( fullscreen ) in monitor one to the desktop @ monitor 2?

Regard's

Hi. I've been trying for a couple of days to get this working... Hope you could give me some pointers, cause I'm stumped.
Some days ago I managed to get the game running up to the point where I log on. I had emerged wine-20050111. I simply
ran #wine WoW -opengl , and the game started. My character was indoors when I last logged out though, so it could be
the minimap thing that crashed it.

Then I downloaded the ebuild for wine-20050419. That did not work at all. (Think I got the same errors I get now)
Then i unmerged wine, and started following the steps here. I checked out the wineCVS, patched it with Try6, copied
the missing DLLs to the systemfolder. Installed Mozilla 1.7.7 and the ActiveX-thingy.(Though I probably could have
dropped that, since I patched the game in win2K).

I run the game from a mounted FAT32-disk. my user has full access to that disk.

Now I get the following error messages. I couldn't find any corresponding errors already in the thread, so I'm posting them here:

The console error reads:

Yup. Got both of those.

I just noticed I forgot to mention what system I'm running. It's an AMD Thunderbird (Firebird?) clocked at 1Ghz, with an Asus GeForce4 Ti 4200 (128MB).
I'll paste in the config relevant config files as well, as I've done a few changes to both the Wine Config an the Xorg.conf

Here's my Wine Config:

I can verify this. The mozilla installer kept crashing with winver set to winxp.

I recently upgraded several pieces of software, and found some problems. Nothing fatal, and I've solved them (kind of), but I thought I'd share the experience; maybe somebody else is finding the same things.First, I upgraded WoW, Wine, my kernel, my X server (from xfree86 in Debian Sid to xorg in Ubuntu), KDE (unlikely to be relevent in any case), and my Nvidia drivers all at once. I immediately wished I'd done these one step at a time, as I found three problems with WoW: the loading screen had the folding problem reported by some others, where half of it looks fine, but there's a diagonal line past which it flickers and looks generally garbled. More seriously, I found my framerate was about half what it had been. Finally, there were a few graphical glitches in game, with some UI elements flickering slightly, though nothing bad.

Anyway, the upshot of testing everything was that the loading screen folding issue and the occasional glitches were linked, but the slowdown was a seperate issue. Unfortunately I can't remember which way round it was now, but one was caused by the kernel version (2.6.8 works fine, 2.6.10 has the problem), and the other by the Nvidia driver version (6629 works, 7174 has the problem). I believe the kernel version was linked with the slowdown, but I'm only about 80% certain I've remembered correctly )

Don't know if anybody finds this useful, but I thought I'd share my experience as something to try in case of problems.

PrometheusDrake: Try using the 20050310 version patched with the try6 patch. The error you're getting is caused by not using a patch containing recent pbuffer changes. Make absolutely sure that you're running with try6. If that fails, post back here. It's also possible that the latest cvs no longer works with try6 for some reason; mine is a few days old.
There is no substitute for experience.
Imperfection indicates a lack of effort.

Works for me with yesterday's CVS, but for anybody who doesn't know, you can update your CVS tree to any given time and date like so:

Code: Select all

cvs update -D "2005-04-24"
The -D flag also works with other cvs operations, like diff.

Also, a good way to get your CVS tree clean would be like this:

Code: Select all

cvs diff > somefile.diff
(Get all differences between your version and the cvs repository)
Followed by

Code: Select all

patch -p0 -R <somefile.diff
This applies all the changes, but the -R flag makes it act in reverse, so it undoes any changes you have made to your tree.

I removed the wine source folder (rm -r wine), ran a cvs checkout, then an update (-D "2005-03-10"). Then I tried to patch it. I got this error message, so I think something went fubar...

Well the offsets should be fine, but the errors almost certainly won't. You might be able to look at the reject files and figure out how to merge the changes manually, but that might not be such a good idea anyway. These problems are caused by the patch being made against cvs as of a different date, so if the files change significantly in the intervening period then the patch doesn't cleanly apply.
All that aside, you'll probably find that the date of CVS isn't the cause of your problems (as I said, mine works with yesterday's cvs fine)
Edit: And with CVS as of about half an hour ago, using patch 6 and no other changes.
