KDE suddenly won't load

Post by Dillius » Sun Mar 13, 2005 7:31 pm

I just decided to restart my computer to refresh it a bit, and now all of a sudden I can't get kde to load. When I run startx it doesn't show any real errors, but then again kde does not start. So i tried just defaulting around to /usr/kde/3.3/bin and tried to run ./startkde.

When I did, i got PLENTY of errors:

xsetroot: unable to open display ' '
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ' '
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
./startkde: line 260: artsshell: command not found
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

I can't really tell what's going on. I just restarted the computer and it started messing up. I'd post some logs... but I don't really know how to get them from that computer to this one since I can't get anything running. Then again, some of these messages indicate that it's failing somewhere along the way trying to start X.

It does say I have X Window System Version 6.8.2. Is that one supposed to be having trouble with the ATI Drivers? I had restarted it and was working on it perfectly up until now. It's pretty random... and that's really the most annoying part.

Anyone have any ideas?

startkde doesn't start the X server, so it fails. You'll want to put startkde in your .xinitrc or use kdm instead.

Well the point is, I had it setup to load kde whenever I did startx, and now nothing happens. If I type in kdm as a user, it says i should only do it as root. If i try to do it as root, it says command not found.

EDIT: Whoa... this is super wierd. It has to be some kind of wierd configuration settings, because if i do:

su
env-update
source /etc/profile
cd *to the kde 3.3 /bin*
./kdm

It allows me to log in... that's the only way it will start up.

check your $PATH variable when you are root.

Code: Select all

echo $PATH
And ensure that you have your path to kde/bin in there, for example if you are using 3.4, $PATH should contain /usr/kde/3.4/bin
