But, what next?

I've fixed the problem for now by downgrading to 1.0.7 as above, but what happens with the masked package as updates become available?

revdep-rebuild

Maybe this hasn't been mentioned yet because everyone has tried it but i thought i should mention revdep-rebuild should be run after upgrading each major version. it says this in the einfo at the end of the build but its easy to miss if your building multiple packages. revdep will do what the previous poster mentioned and re-emerge the packages that need to be relinked. the only one i'm having trouble with is xine for some reason. mplayer works though so  Hope this helps at least one of you guys.

I've been having segfaults in xmms whenever I launch aplay (used to play some notification sounds in my fluxbox). Everything else works just fine. I started revdep-rebuild, but the packages it wants to rebuild are packages I hardly ever use, and no binarys from those packages has been runnig when I had problems. So I didn't bother to let revdep-rebuild do anything.

I'm tried downgrading alsa-lib to 1.0.7 just now. It seemed to do the trick. All other alsa-* I left at 1.0.8.

None of my other machines running alsa-*-1.0.8 have this problem except for a custom gentoo livecd I created. MPlayer/mpg123/ogg123 all work, but beep-media-player fails. I traced the problem to alsa-lib with gdb and all the noise about this bug. To further the oddness all machines and the livecd use similar gentoo-sources versions.

I think the problem has been fixed. Found this quote in the changelog for gentoo-sources.
*gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r6 (07 Apr 2005)

07 Apr 2005; Jeremy Huddleston <eradicator@gentoo.org>
+gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r6.ebuild:
Fixed the sparc ffb.h patch to apply correctly. Removed the dm patches as
they caused oopses under certain circumstances. Fix p630 LPAR support on
ppc64. Fix deadlocks in rwsem code. Fix congestion in TCP BIC algorithm.
Fixes a race in the ext3 journal code. Fix matroxfb endianness issues for
ppc64. Fix oops when mismatching alsa-lib and alsa driver versions. Fix
hardlink count in /proc/<pid> directories. Fix hardlink count in
/proc/<pid>/task directories. Bump inotify to version 0.22-2. Stable amd64
for security fixes.

02 Apr 2005; Daniel Drake <dsd@gentoo.org>
gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r5.ebuild:
Stable on x86. Please upgrade for security fixes.
My uneffected boxs all run 2.6.11-r6 so I guessing the problem should fade away.

So this is definately a kernel problem. Does anyone know what kernel versions and sources were affected?

Also had troubles with alsa when several programs tried to use the soundcard at the same time.

After playing around with different versions of alsa (1.07, 1.08, 1.09-rc2) and kernelversions i just edited /etc/alsasound.conf to get rid of the problem:
The HowTo is here:
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Al ... and%20GAIM

Now i finally can run gaim, xmms and kmix at the same time again. Before this each time i got a message on icq kmix and xmss crashed...

Isn't the wiki page you suggest just to do with setting up dmix? Dmix performs software mixing for those sound cards that can't do it themselves.

The problem we're all having here is to do with something strange happening in the kernel, and seems to affect sound cards regardless of whether they are capable of hardware mixing or not. In my case, I have an Audigy, which has always worked flawlessly until I upgraded alsa-lib.

Has anybody managed to upgrade to 1.0.8 successfully after having this problem? Did revdep-rebuild fix anything? Upgrading kernel versions?

Cheers.

Count me as another user with this problem. I am using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.11-r6 and have tried alsa (1.07, 1.08, 1.09-rc2) only 1.07 doesn't crash. So whomever suggested it was fixed in masked packages after 1.08 - it isn't for my case. Crash on system startup or kmix startup immediately. I have a bog standard Audigy 2...

Hope 1.09-rc2 doesn't get unmasked until this is resolved.

Is there a bug recorded? I couldn't find it. I'd like to see if I could add any info.

I am also expereiencing this problem after installing xine. I didn't realize it until just now, but soundless movieds in xine play fine. ...Others... No. Sound on UT works though. :D <-- Big smile. --> :D

Anyhoo.

EMU10K1 Also built into kernel
alsa stuff also in kernel.

added mask, and am reinstalling alsa...

I wonder if this could have anything to do with the emu10k1 cards. ...I noticed it was mentioned a few times... ...My specific sound card is a SB PCI512.

Take care. Pls don't be too mean to the noob. ;)

Archer

PS WOOT the old version of alsa did it. xine rocks. I have sound. Keep up the good work folks. I used to run Slackware a long time ago. ...More recently, Suse. and even more recently, this wonderful thing called Gentoo. ..I am very appreciative. :D <-- Bigger smile.

Hey, and if anyone is willing, I'm a bit of a C++ programmer. ....If someone is interested in showing me the ropes of a project, or directing me on how to contribute, lemme know.

Woo! Fixed it here. (using emu10k1 module)

Upgraded to kernel 2.6.11-r6 (keeping all the alsa stuff in).

emerged alsa-headers-1.0.9_rc2-r1 and alsa-lib-1.0.9_rc2-r1 by adding the following to /etc/portage/package.keywords:

Code: Select all

media-sound/alsa-headers ~x86
media-libs/alsa-lib ~x86
Then did

Code: Select all

# equery d alsa-lib
and re-emerged all the packages it said.

Everything working nicely again now.

I had the same problems with xmms everyone else had. I'm on amd64 and downgrading to alsa-* 1.0.7 had no positive results for me. But while trying out the 'equery d alsa-lib' and also doing a 'equery d xmms' I noticed that I had a package xmms-mad installed. This packed caused me much grief before and since it isn't really needed I unmerged it after all other proposed solutions had failed.

And after unmerging xmms-mad, lo and behold: no more crashing xmms.

So you might try it if you have it installed (though I'm not sure whether it's something amd64 specific).

OK ...I feel like a moron.

....Alsa... ...Is built into the kernel. ....It just donned on me that I needed to well... ...Build the freshly downloaded alsa information into the kernel.

So, my perceptions:

You need to rebuild the kernel if you have alsa compiled in...

I used ' emerge --pretend --emptytree alsa-libs", (I think that's what I did) and that clued me in that it was the kernel...

...Anyhow, working fine here now...

Hey great thread!

I was having problems with xine not playing and giving the segfault.

Did as posts suggested, took out alsa-lib 1.0.8, added it to /etc/portage/package.mask, re-emerged alsalib and bingo!! alls working well.

P4 running emu10k1 soundcard and 2.6.11-r6.:D

I really sincerely think the only problem may be that folks just need to recompile their kernel...

is this problem solved?

  • Quote

Post by shabbychef » Wed Jun 08, 2005 2:10 am

I had similar problems to those outlined above: using xmms with alsa caused
kde to crash. (maybe i don't know the secret key sequence, but i was only able
to recover by flipping the power switch--very unpleasant.) this only seemed
to happen when xmms was playing and another app tried to do something
(like firefox loaded a page (perhaps flash tried to take control of sound?)).

am i just supposed to emerge the latest gentoo-sources, rebuild kernel and
that does it? (i am currently emerge --update'ing my world, so won't know for
a while whether this solves...)

EDIT:
I think perhaps this did correct a problem, but my setup has some other problems.
the sound does work, and i don't appear to have conflicts between different
sound uses. I think my problem now is ACPI vs. wireless. I have had
kernel panic outside of X, just in terminal mode. Not yet sure which system
log I should be looking to figure these things out, but I am on my way.

I have done the following:
* Upgraded to the latest stable gentoo-sources (2.6.11-r9), with alsa compiled as modules.
* Upgraded alsa to 1.0.8.
* Ran revdep-rebuild
* Remerged all the packages listed as the output of "equery d alsa-lib".

.. and yet, things still crash. Can it really be a kernel problem? Oddly enough, the mass recompiling appears to have done something, because I cannot get alsamixer to crash, no matter how hard I try now. Kmix still can't stay up for half a minute before wetting itself though.

I might try doing this too:

Code: Select all

revdep-rebuild --soname libasound.so.2
.. to see if that helps. There are tons of packages though!

I also tried upgrading to the latest unstable alsa-lib-1.0.9 - for the moment, it appears to have stopped all the crashing! Even Kmix is still there!

I suggest trying alsa-lib-1.0.9 for anyone still having this problem.
