What you might want to try is compiling the AGP support as modules rather than compiling it into the kernel. This can sometimes be the difference between things working and not working.
Thanks, Wedge. I'll try it.

Should I compile both agpgart and nvidia_agp as modules? Does it make any sense to compile agpgart in the kernel and nvidia_agp as a module?
The usual thing to do is make both modules. Remember to load them before the fglrx module.

Normally, you have to enable the "qt" USE flag and emerge ati-drivers-extra, then run fireglcontrol. That program should display the current AGP mode. However, that's a bit of a pain if you don't use QT normally (like me), so I mutilated the source code for fireglcontrol a bit and made a console version which just displays the AGP mode. It seems to work for me, so if you want to try it go ahead :) Download this archive, extract it, cd to fgl_agp, run "make", then "./fgl_agp". X has to be running for it to work properly.

@mvc: try appending "vmalloc=128M" to your bootloaders command line (the same place as you put framebuffer/bootsplash options etc).

Neato Torpeado Wedge, thx.

Code: Select all

root@BlueBox fgl_agp # /home/ryan/downloads/fgl_agp/fgl_agp
AGP mode: 8x

Wedge,

compiling as modules did not help. useinternalagpgart set to both yes and no did not help. Loaded the agpgart, nvidia_agp and fglrx in that order. I'd figure I'd start with Xorg.0.log first:

The log doesn't really show much extra information for this particular problem. How high have you set your AGP aperture size? Have you tried the 8.10.19 driver version? I think some people have had problems with this version and have had to downgrade.

hi,

Appending "vmalloc=128M" to the bootloader didn't make any change apparently. Is there anything else I could try?

Wegde_: Thank you for your review of the log.

I increased aperture from 128 to 256. I will also try 512 over the weekend.

I will try to downgrade to 8.10.19 also, but I have to say I am not that familiar with the process of version control yet. Is there a link I can go to to learn that? I would think that there are settings in the package.keywords I would have to set, true?

I am beginning to suspect that there may be an issue with the fact that I use an nforce3 250 chipset, which is to support a 64-bit processor. I bought the Neo2 board for it's superior I/O connectivity, not the fact that it's 64-bit. In fact, I have been trying to run gentoo in pure 32-bit mode to try to not have compatibility problems in running 32-bit emulation. I am now thinking that the 32-bit nvidia_agp driver may not be tested with my nforce3 hardware.

Final thought: in your FAQ, you state:

NB: AMD64 users: you must also select the AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support option in addition to those described above.

is this possible or desired in a 32-bit install?

Thanks again, John

What you might want to try is compiling the AGP support as modules rather than compiling it into the kernel. This can sometimes be the difference between things working and not working.
Thanks, Wedge. I'll try it.

Should I compile both agpgart and nvidia_agp as modules? Does it make any sense to compile agpgart in the kernel and nvidia_agp as a module?
The usual thing to do is make both modules. Remember to load them before the fglrx module.
PaveQ wrote:How do I know what AGP speed my card is running? Should be 4x.
I have QT merge allready. Tried to merge ati-drivers-extra, but it wanted to merge old ati-drivers. Seems like I have to wait new version from ati-drivers-extra to come up. :(

Try a higher value, like 192 or 256.

It's pretty simple in this situation. To downgrade, make sure X isn't running, then do

Code: Select all

rmmod fglrx && emerge -C ati-drivers && emerge \<ati-drivers-8.12.10 && modprobe fglrx
That will unload the old fglrx module, remove the current driver version, emerge the latest version below 8.12.10, then load the newly compiled module. After that you should be able to start X again. If this does fix your problem, you should add the line

Code: Select all

=media-video/ati-drivers-8.12.10
to your /etc/portage/package.mask. This should prevent portage trying to emerge the 8.12.10 version again.

I'm not too sure of the 64-bit stuff since I don't have a 64-bit box myself, but I think if you have an AMD64 processor you should have that option enabled.

Try the little program I posted then :)

They don't appear to have changed from 8.10.19 with respect to Composite. Enabling it will still disable 3D acceleration.

Thanks Wedge_, passing vmalloc=256M to the kernel did stop the vmalloc message from appearing, but unfortunately it still hangs my system when I run glxgears, and now without even displaying the black window :(.

Also I still have those

Code: Select all

[fglrx] Internal AGP support requested, but kernel AGP support active.
[fglrx] Have to use kernel AGP support to avoid conflicts.
in kernel log, and I cannot understand why it says that I have AGP support active since I know for sure that it is compiled as modules:

Code: Select all

marco@ravel marco $ lsmod
Module Size Used by
fglrx 235932 7
uhci_hcd 30348 0
ehci_hcd 41348 0
snd_atiixp_modem 13732 1
ohci_hcd 32264 0
ati_agp 6796 1
agpgart 28204 2 ati_agp
snd_atiixp 16548 3
snd_ac97_codec 71904 2 snd_atiixp_modem,snd_atiixp
ndiswrapper 104356 0
could this be the cause for the system hard lock?

thanks

Do you have "UseInternalAGPGART" set to "yes" in your xorg.conf? When using the kernel AGP modules it should be "no".

I want to use the internal AGP, and so I have

Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes"

in xorg.conf. I also compiled kernel AGP as modules, since not doing so produces an error message when I load the ati drivers. Are you saying that I must not build the kernel AGP modules? I thought that the fact of having the modules around didn't make a difference, since they are loaded only when they are needed.

thanks!

OK, but you should try both - sometimes things will only work in one configuration.
mvc wrote:Are you saying that I must not build the kernel AGP modules? I thought that the fact of having the modules around didn't make a difference, since they are loaded only when they are needed.
You should be able to use the internal AGP support if the kernel AGP modules are not loaded. Your dmesg output indicates that the driver tries to use the internal AGP support but fails because the kernel AGP support is active (ie the modules are loaded). If you're autoloading the agpgart and ati-agp modules, disable that and just load the fglrx module.

I read on ATI's website that the 2.6.* kernels need a separate module for the agp to function properly... for me it would be the via-agp module... is this right? Would this resolve some of my seemingly random problems?

Is it ever possible to have TV-out working on hardened system?

I've Radeon9800pro and use xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1 & ati-drivers-8.10.19. Everything works fine until I switched to hardened. Now I can use Xorg only with it own "radeon" driver... it's nice, but I need TV-out.

Is it possible to get TV-out working using "radeon" driver or is it possible to get ati-drivers working in hardened environment? Here is my log (I sure you all already see this many times):

If only way to get TV-out is compile Xorg and/or ati-drivers without hardened, then can you please give me example command how I can do this? I mean, is I need to just switch off "hardened" and "dlloader" USE-flags for xorg-x11, or is I should switch gcc to vanilla profile and recompile xorg-x11 and ati-drivers (and maybe kernel too?)... and if right way is switch gcc profile then how I can assure next time I run emerge -uDav world it will compile everything with hardened gcc but xorg&ati-drivers with vanilla gcc?

Did you create your xorg.conf using fglrxconfig? I had this same problem with unresolved symbols, and recreating my xorg.conf with the latest version of fglrxconfig fixed it.

No, I use my older xorg.conf which works fine with same version of Xorg and ati-drivers until switching to hardened toolchain. But I've just try to recreate xorg.conf with fglrxconfig and this don't help - still unresolved symbols.

Hi All,

Would anyone know what's the correct module to compile for an Intel 915G chipset? This is what lspci shows:

Code: Select all

0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 915G/P/GV/GL/PL/910GL PCI Express Root Port (rev 04) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=0
I/O behind bridge: 0000c000-0000cfff
Memory behind bridge: cfe00000-cfefffff
Prefetchable memory behind bridge: d0000000-dfffffff
Expansion ROM at 0000c000 [disabled] [size=4K]
Capabilities: [88] #0d [0000]
Capabilities: [80] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [90] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit- Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [a0] #10 [0141]
I have compiled and installed the intel-agp module but my Radeon X600 RV380 card is not recognised:

Code: Select all

0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 0x3e50 [Radeon X600] (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.: Unknown device 0328
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=cfec0000]
I/O ports at c000 [size=256]
Memory at cfee0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Expansion ROM at 00020000 [disabled]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [58] #10 [0001]

0000:01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600] Secondary
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.: Unknown device 0329
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Memory at cfef0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [58] #10 [0001]
I can get X to run but the whole thing is rather unstable, i.e. resizing an xterm or launching links -g and trying to scroll using the mouse (wheel or just dragging the scrollbar) always results in the kernel going AWAL. I have to pull the plug every time because Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work, nor does Alt+SysRq+k.

The Xorg.o.log shows:

Code: Select all

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(--) Chipset RADEON X600 (RV380 3E50) found
  *
  *
  *
(**) fglrx(0): Option "mtrr" "off"
The dmesg shows:

Code: Select all

mtrr: base(0xd0000000) is not aligned on a size(0x7ff0000) boundary
[fglrx:firegl_addmap] *ERROR* mtrr allocation failed (-22)

[fglrx] free PCIe = 54804480
[fglrx] max PCIe = 54804480
[fglrx] free LFB = 122613760
[fglrx] max LFB = 122613760
[fglrx] free Inv = 134217728
[fglrx] max Inv = 134217728
[fglrx] total Inv = 134217728
[fglrx] total TIM = 0
[fglrx] total FB = 0
[fglrx] total PCIe = 16384
I have mtrr built in the kernel - is that a problem?

Any suggestions?

PS. The Radeon X600 came as part of the new box: Compaq Pressario SR1180uk Intel P4 3.4G.

It's pretty simple in this situation. To downgrade, make sure X isn't running, then do

Code: Select all

rmmod fglrx && emerge -C ati-drivers && emerge \<ati-drivers-8.12.10 && modprobe fglrx

This should prevent portage trying to emerge the 8.12.10 version again.
nomaam wrote:NB: AMD64 users: you must also select the AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support option in addition to those described above.

is this possible or desired in a 32-bit install?
I'm not too sure of the 64-bit stuff since I don't have a 64-bit box myself, but I think if you have an AMD64 processor you should have that option enabled.

Wedge,

Decided to try a 64-bit install. All video acceleration now works great. The 32-bit solutions were getting harder than doing a 64-bit install. Thanks for your help

Any ideas why my card is not recognised - as per two posts ago?

Could that have something to do with X and the kernel crashing?

Any advice much appreciated!

Hi there;

I know that the Ati driver problems have already been heavily discussed, but I can't seem to find a solution that is transferable to my system, especially since it's behaviour strongly confuses me.

My System:
Gentoo (logically (-; - but I had the same problem already under Debian Sarge)
Sony Vaio PCG-K215Z (ATI Mobility Radeon 9200)
Xorg (6.8.2-r1)

Problem:
I use the 2.6.11 Gentoo Vanilla Sources. Using this sources, I compiled two Kernels.
One that fulfils the expactations of the fglrx-driver perfectly, and one who is not that perfect.
(the NOT ideal one does only have "agpgart" and "fglrx" but no "ati-agp" module")
If I boot the Kernel without ati-agp, X is starting nicely, however fglrxinfo tells me that Mesa is in use. (I have done open-gl update)

If I boot the "ideal" Kernel, and load(in that order): "agpgart" "ati-agp and "fglrx" and finally X start, it seems as if the X-Server was booting normally but the screen stays black. The system then does not react on keyboard input and the fan is running wild.

If log in through ssh, top tells me that X is consuming 9% of Cpu. I can only end this Condition through manual shutdown(shutdown now -h doesn't do anything).

The log of the fauled boot never contains any Error messages, dmesg(before starting X) also is error-free.
I already played around with UseInternalAGPGart and MonitorLayout.

Oh, and finally, i use the ati-agp because lspci tells:

Code: Select all

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS200/RS200M AGP Bridge [IGP 340M] (rev 02)
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc PCI Bridge [IGP 340M]
I hope that someone can help me,
Ciao, bagel

Update (-;
I think I'm coming closer to the solution..

When I do a "modprobe ati-agp" it autodetects my card as a "IGP-345M" while in reality it is a Ati Mobility Radeon 9200.

Does anyone have a clue how a I can tell the module which card I'm using?

Greeting, Thanks in Advance
Ciao, bagel

Hello guys

I hope to find an answer to my troubles
I managed to make Xserver work flawlessly with DRI and all that things
When I reboot and start again X I can only hear my KDE starting, but my monitor says that no signal are detected resultind in a complete black screen
I checked with

dmsg | less
cat /var/log/Xorg.log.0 | grep EE
cat /var/log/Xorg.log.0 | grep WW

no errors
and no warning differ from the previous one with a working Xserver
to fix that I usually type a serie of command :

modules-update
opengl-update ati
env-update
source /etc/profile

then I must reboot to the thing work

sometimes I have to re-emerge ati-drivers
and more seldom nothing seems to works

Then after x reboot this malfunction come out again

If some one got a clue on this trouble, I would be gratefull
