Unable to use "run in terminal" for MatLab and Gno

Post by Lemma » Mon Dec 06, 2004 10:18 am

I'd like to setup an icon with MatLab (R14) instead of having to start a terminal and type "matlab". I used to be able to do that by choosing "run in terminal" but as of gnome 2.6 (I think, I did a compleate reinstall also, for other reasons...) the terminal window does show up, as do the matlab startscreen but then it just quits... I can start it if I manually open matlab from an xterm-window but not if I use an icon, neather with the "run in terminal" nor with "xterm -hold -e matlab". I am at loss here, any of you know how to proceed?

I am using a matlab site-license so it may have something to do with it not being able to reach the licance-server, but as it does when I run the commans manually it does seem a bit far fetched to me...

Am I really the only one with this problem? 8O

No, you are not, but I haven't been able to find a solution either. I'm using fluxbox and I am trying to get matlab into the menu, but I have the same result. I found what claims to be a solution to the problem here but this didn't help me (I just end up with a file that has matlab's initial "To Get Started" message and the first matlab prompt in it). Tell me if the method mentioned in that link helps you.

What happens if you use the nosplash option

Code: Select all

matlab -nosplash

I have reinstalled the whole system (due to other reasons, the computer may have been compromised) and it has worked just fine after that ?!? I run matlab as "matlab" and have the "run in terminal" checked - no more than that...

Matlab doesn't like to be run from menu's for some reason...

The work around is to run matlab with:
xterm -e matlab
which starts matlab from a terminal..
or xterm -e nohup matlab &
which starts matlab from a terminal and closes the terminal when matlab has started.

Solved a long time ago but I should have posted what I did (I did as you suggested ;-)). Thx for your reply, now the solution is out there (but not thanks to me  ).

for completeness, mathworks have there own solution for this problem:

http://www.mathworks.com/support/soluti ... on=1-1B5ZV

Basically when you create a menu or icon replace "/usr/local/matlab7/matlab" with "setsid /usr/local/matlab7/matlab -desktop"
