Xinerama lockup?

  • Quote

Post by darkweaseljedi » Sun Jan 12, 2003 11:25 pm

I just got my dual monitor setup working with xinerama by following the howto.

2 problems though.

1) I haven't set X to load at launch yet, as I'm still trying to get some stuff configured. For now, I log in as root and launch KDM (or XDM, but that one doesn't let me choose my window manager at login). Anyway, from the KDM/XDM screen I log in the user I want and all works nicely. Dual monitor is lovely. However, when I go to "log out" to try and get back to the KDM/XDM screen, my keyboard locks, and I get the default X "eye bugy" grey pattern. My mouse still works, but it only moves the cursor on 1 monitor. If I move the mouse over to the second monitor the cursor stops moving at the "seam", and resumes moving when the mouse comes back. Anyway, the only way to get out of there is to do a hard reboot, as the keyboard is locked. Any ideas?

Config:
Gentoo 1.4rc2
NVidia Geforce GTS2 (AGP)
ATI 3D Rage Pro (PCI)

2) KDM. I prolly just need to RTFM, but when I launch KDM it has a bunch of users I could "click" on. sshd, postfix, .... Why are my daemon users showing up there?

thanks for any help

I had the same problem with a All-In-Wonder 128 and a PCI RAGE pro card. I never resolved it and eventually just removed the RAGE Pro Card

Also, to answer your second question...

you can edit the users that show up through the 'control center'

I should point out, this didn't happen when I would run Xserver with only 1 of the screens configured (either 1). It only happens when I run with the dual configuration.

thanks s0be, I figured there was an easy way.

Also, things work fine if I don't use KDM/XDM. I'm thinking for now just to log in CLI and then startx.

Seems like it should work though KDM though.

This is an old[er] topic, but I didn't see a solution posted, so I'll chime in.

I was having the same symptoms using Xinerama and xdm. I could log in once, but when I log out, I get a partial xdm screen and my keyboard locks. I can move the mouse cursor, but it freezes at the seams.

Anyways, I added "DisplayManager*terminateServer: true" to my xdm-config file and the problem is avoided.

I'm using a GeForce 4 MX440 (64MB) and an Vanta TNT2 (8MB).

Good luck,

I've tried to set up xinerama before and failed miserably could one of you post a copy of your XF86config-4 file? So I can hopefully see where I’m going wrong.

Thanks gretsel.. I'm using KDM but that at least gives me somewhere to start. :) Unless KDM uses XDM's conf file? I seem to remeber something like this...

I'm having the exact same problem, using dual-head on a radeon8500... Both in Gentoo (just installed.. lovin it :)) and Redhat...

Ninja -

My XF86Config file looks pretty much the same as the config file in the Xinerama HOWTO:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWT ... onfig.html

Of course, I have different video cards and monitors, but that info won't help you at all. What sort of problems are you having?

Please have a look in this thread for a temporary solution (filed by a KDE Bug report).
