Apache or Cherokee

  • Quote

Post by volospin » Wed Apr 06, 2005 1:33 am

I am wondering what http server should I install on my router/server.
The primary task to do is as following:

1. support simple html (no php, javascript, cgi or whatever) and files
2. redirect additional domain to an internal server that is not supported by this router.

Should I... install cherokee and configure it
or should I install apache and use minimal modules?
(I still wondering/digging what modules should be loaded)

Thanks for reading this post and any suggestions are welcome

Apache would be an overkill for a simple html website.

Cherokee looks quite good, but you may find bugs and security issues aren't fixed as quickly as Apache's are.

A search on Google for Cheroke Webserver brings up a few results of information, then a lot of vulnerability reports!

Have a look at thttpd. It might suit you better.

Thanks, thttpd seems to be a lightweight choice which is comparatively faster than Apache.
I will dig into it...

--------------------------

If I want virtual hosting... I need to have several /etc/init.d/thttpd for each domain?

--------------------------

virutal hosting doesn't need to set chroot...

If you can then get apache. Eeven if it is overkill, you will be getting the experience for it. I'm sure there will eventually be a point where you need php, javascript, cgi-bin etc... Then you will be able to work in the already familiar apache evnironment insead of having to learn how a different webserver works.

Good luck with wich ever path you choose :-D
