Im new to the getoo distribution, but ive heard its really good. Ive downloaded the universal live cd for AMD64. I can get it booted up but i cannot get the network started. Heres some things i have tried:

# net-setup eth0
eth0: error fetching interface information: device not found

im using and Nforce 3 motherboard and i think i need drivers for the integrated network card but im not sure which ones

Yep - I think you need to load suitable modules for your network card, but unfortunately i don't know which. You may want to list all the available modules (are you on the Live CD?) which are normally somewhere inside /lib/modules... Some clues about what i-net card you're using - type:

Code: Select all

lspci
.

Try

Code: Select all

modprobe sk98lin
I think this is the module that the marvell uses.

Then type

Code: Select all

net-setup eth0
and it should detect it.

Do you have tow network sockets on that board then???
Cause I've checked the net and there appears to be a Marvell 88E1111 GbE PHY and the CK8S Ethernet Controllers

If so then try

Code: Select all

modprobe 3c59x
for the nvidia and

Code: Select all

modprobe sk98lin
for the marvell
Failling this I have no idea what modules you need.

Hope this works

Ok I have one final suggestion, download a copy of Knoppix and burn it to cd. KNoppix usually picks up every device ever created.

Reboot in to knoppix and run

Code: Select all

lsmod
If it has found ure network device then the module will be listed here. Then reboot back into gentoo, modprob the module and hey presto. I realise this is a long way round it but it should work :P

No need. Just do an Gentoo install from within knoppix.

Here's the direct link: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml#doc_chap3

You can only do a pure 32-bit install from knoppix. In other words, all programs will be compiled as 32-bit executables.

If you want to do a 64 bit install with as much 64-bit code as possible, you will need to use Ubuntu liveCD as a stepping stone to install Gentoo.
