Where would I find the package.use and package.keywords??

[ebuild     UD] media-video/vlc-0.6.2 [0.8.1] -3dfx +X +aac -aalib -alsa (-altivec) +arts -debug -dvb +dvd -dvdread +esd -fbcon -ggi +gnome +gtk +imlib -joystick +kde -lirc +mad -matroska* -mozilla +ncurses +nls +oggvorbis +oss +qt +sdl -slp +svga +truetype -v4l -wxwindows* -xosd +xv +xvid 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

Did you add

Code:

media-video/vlc ~x86

to your package.keywords.

It looks like it is trying to downgrade your package. Also you need to add wxwindows and ffmpeg to your package.use for vlc:

Code:

media-video/vlc wxwindows ffmpeg

You need to create them in /etc/portage/. the simplest way is simply to add wxwindows, matroska and ffmpeg to your /etc/make.conf use flags, then "#nano -w /etc/portage/package.keywords" and add "media-video/vlc ~x86"

It depends if you want every package to use those flags or only vlc. If you want vlc only to use those flags then you need to:

Code: Select all

nano -w /etc/portage/package.use
Add the lines I told you above and save the file. Then do what he suggested above and unmask vlc.

I was having the same problem as a number of others, missing codecs, no gui. Recompiled with all the right use flags and voila , vlc is back to its working self =)

Just wanted to say thanks to the various posters in this thread for detailing what use flags were needed and pointing to the relevant material on VLC's website.

These forums are one of the reasons I'm such a fan on gentoo.

Code: Select all

media-video/vlc-0.8.1 -3dfx +X -a52 -aac -aalib +alsa (-altivec) +arts -bidi* -cdda -cddb -cdio -debug -dts -dvb +dvd +esd -fbcon -ffmpeg +flac -freetype -ggi -gnutls -hal -httpd +joystick -libcaca +lirc -live +mad -matroska* +mozilla* +mpeg +ncurses +nls -ogg +oggvorbis +opengl +oss -stream +svg +svga -theora -unicode -v4l -vcd -vlm -wxwindows* +xosd +xv 0 kB
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a audio cable from your cdrom to your sound card? I'm not sure if you can make vlc play audio through the ide cable, but I know totem can.

Yep, cable is conected. It's definately a VLC issue because audio works fine with any other application such as mplayer, xmms etc. Playing a music DVD is fine. It's only when I try a movie DVD that I get no audio. Very strange....

Try adding matroska to your use flag, its a wild guess on my part, but it couldn't hurt

I actually did add matroska. Why it's showing that it's not installed is also strange. I added the following to my USE flag:

Code: Select all

USE="dvd nls bidi tryetype wxwindows imlib matroska faad png -mozilla" emerge vlc
Bidi, wxwindows and matroska have "*" next to them when I do "emerge -pv vlc" :

Code: Select all

media-video/vlc-0.8.1 -3dfx +X -a52 -aac -aalib +alsa (-altivec) +arts -bidi* -cdda -cddb -cdio -debug -dts -dvb +dvd +esd -fbcon -ffmpeg +flac -freetype -ggi -gnutls -hal -httpd +joystick -libcaca +lirc -live +mad -matroska* +mozilla* +mpeg +ncurses +nls -ogg +oggvorbis +opengl +oss -stream +svg +svga -theora -unicode -v4l -vcd -vlm -wxwindows* +xosd +xv 0 kB
Really strange!

Try adding them to /etc/make.conf and see if it will accept them there.

Add a52 to your use flags. That should solve your problem. I had the same issue and that fixed it.

Words from the VLC dev.

Great to see that some ppl are again committed to providing good ebuilds for VLC.

I have just updated our gentoo page with some improved instructions
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-gentoo.html

Also i saw someone mention an issue with skins. I suggest to add a keyword "skins". This option could then enable the skins2 config option. Be aware that the skins require BOTH wxwindows and imlib. Especially the first is not always forced by VLC which is a gross oversight of the maintainers of that part of the code in my eyes.

I also saw issues with ffmpeg reported by you guys. 2 things.
1: vlc requires 0.4.8
2: vlc needs to be told about the way ffmpeg was configured

--with-ffmpeg-lame on vlc's configure line if ffmpeg was compiled with lame support. same for zlib and faac (although that might not be in this version of vlc yet).

It's a very unfortunate system, but well, ffmpeg buildssystem basically sucks for not reporting back to applications how it was configured and compiled.

Well I have a new problem with vlc. I am trying to update it in emerge world and i'm having a problem with that.

Code: Select all

root # emerge --pretend world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies \
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050226-r1" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050226-r2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
- media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.9_p20050226-r1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
section 2.2 "Software Availability" in the Gentoo Handbook.
!!! (dependency required by "media-video/vlc-0.8.1-r1" [ebuild])

!!! Problem with ebuild media-video/vlc-0.8.1-r1
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.

!!! Depgraph creation failed.
I have tried to emerge this may times and i am not sure what to do. I have done the whole ACCEPT_KEYWORD="~x86"

You need to add

Code: Select all

media-video/ffmpeg ~x86
to your package.keywords.

VLC emerge -how to pass the --enable-pvr flag to .configure?

  • Quote

Post by bocacorazon » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:55 pm

I have a Hauppauge card, and on the videolan documentation I read that for these cards I need to pass --enable-pvr flag to .configure

How can I do this in the context of the emerge?
Do I need to create a custom ebuild?
