Playing Quake 3 Demo files

I have two issues here.

First, any demo's I record I can play... but I have to play them manually by issuing a console command manually:

/demo demo0000.dm_86

If I attempt to play them through the menu, it give and error saying it can't open "demo/demo0000.dm_86".

My second issue is that I can't seem to play any downloaded demo files. First they all come with the extension ".dm3" and mine come with ".dm_86". After renaming them and attemping to load them, I get this error:

ERROR: CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message

I think they have to be in the demo dir inside whatever mod's dir they were recorded with. If you try to select it from the menu without switching mods first, it's only going to check in baseq3's demo dir. As for the dm3, no idea...is that maybe a Doom3 demo that someone put up as Q3?

I've been wondering about this too. I've tried to make the demos executable and moving them from ~/.q3a/foo/demo/demos to /opt/quake3/foo/demos, but none of the things helped.
It's a rather annoying issue.

That should work though, I just meant if you tried to play a Rocket Arena 3 demo from /baseq3/demos instead of /arena/demos. Having it in .q3a should be fine though.

If the extension is .dm3 then it is incompatible with the current version of q3. Also some mods like OSP or Threewave don't see the demos unless they're in all-caps minus the extension. I've found a few other quirks in how demos work under the Linux port.
