When I switched from XFree to Xorg several months ago, I started getting lockups whenever I left X on for a couple of days. I gave up on trying to fix the lockups, and just made sure I closed out the X session every night, and things seemed to work a little better.

I started to mess around and turned Composite on when I was trying out transparency, and just never bothered to turn it off again. Well, I decided to try out XFCE instead of fluxbox, and noticed it was a little slower than I was accustomed to, and then I remembered I had left Composite on. Well, the night I decided to turn Composite off, and things were running a little faster. That night I had a nice uptime of 22 days. The next morning I wake up, the X session has crashed, and when I try to "startx", I get the "x" cursor only, and the same lockup I was having several weeks ago. Is there a chance that turning Composite on increases stability?

@Nvidia-users:

I did a bit of patching to the xorg ebuild by including an "nvidia" use-flag, so that it doesn't compile MESA and most of other drivers. This should save compile time and a bit of hd space. Check it out here:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80722

Obviously Donnie doesn't like this idea. So it probably won't get merged. If you are nvidia binary user and want this, as well, tell Donnie your opinion...

6.8.1 and opengl-update

  • Quote

Post by ucntcme » Mon Feb 07, 2005 12:06 am

Yes, I know it's keyword masked. But I'd like to try out latest 6.8.1, and nvidia-glx. Problem is, I get a blockage between xorg-x11 6.8.1 and opengl-update. Any suggestions on resolving this (that don't include not using nvidia-glx) welcomed.

I can upgrade to 6.8.1 w/oif I use the -opengl flag, but then nvidia-glx will require opengl-update which then blocks again as it requires 6.7.0.x. Not that I like opengl-update, as I have to run the damned thing every time I reboot (and I I shouldn't have to -- I didn't have this problem in non-gentoo) or things like mplayer segfault.

Just as a suggestion, compare your /etc/portage/package.keywords and package.unmask with my ones below:

package.keywords:

Code: Select all

x11-base/xorg-x11 ~x86
x11-misc/xcompmgr ~x86
x11-misc/transset ~x86
x11-misc/ttmkfdir ~x86
net-www/mozilla-firefox ~x86
media-libs/freetype ~x86
media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86
media-video/nvidia-glx ~x86
x11-base/opengl-update ~x86
package.unmask:

Code: Select all

x11-base/xorg-x11
x11-misc/xcompmgr
x11-misc/transset
net-www/mozilla-firefox
media-libs/freetype
x11-base/opengl-update # the newest glx-drivers depend on opengl-update-2.1.1,
# which are still masked. This line will unmask it.

Don't worry, you don't have to like it, you just need it (unless you know what you're doing)! ;-)

Very strange, sounds like you screwed something up. Can't help you with this, sorry...

I just installed Xorg 6.8.2, and I'm having trouble with opengl.
I have an ATI IGP 320M, so I use the Xorg driver for radeon (along with kernel radeon drm), and that used to work fine with 6.8.0, but now it seems that opengl won't work at all. It uses mesa instead of the drm/dri combo it's supposed to. Any ideas?
Thanks

Goeland, did you happen to compile the new xorg version with gcc-3.4, but your
kernel still was build with 3.3? I had this problem and recompiling my kernel
with gcc-3.4 solved this (+recompiling my graphic drivers of course).
That did the trick, but there's probably an easier solution...

afaik I'm using gcc 3.4 for both kernel and Xorg... but I'll double check that. I've been doing an emerge -e world earlier, because of inconsistencies just like that, so it should be fine. Just updated to kernel 2.6.11-rc3 too.
Maybe I'll try downgrading to 2.6.10.
Thanks for the info though.

I don't know what 6.8.2 did to the fonts, but they look so much nicer now!

I thought 6.8.2 would help my xfce4.2 + xinerama + xcompisit issue (it takes literally minutes to draw windows), but no dice.

I have an issue. Or three. Not sure which.

1) I've tried this on 2.6.9-r11 gentoo-dev-sources, 2.6.10-r4/r5,and now 2.6.11-r4-nitro

2) with xorg-x11 6.8.0 things are great, can't get ati working.

3) with current xorg-x11 (6.8.2) both xorg-radeon and ati-fglrx drivers lock the box hard if I load glx, usually as soon as I try to move something on the screen or pop a menu -- off kicker or a menubar. == don't load glx, everything hunky dory until I run firefox. -- somewhere from 2 to 5 minutes later the box locks up...

Ok, so I have now fixed my opengl problem, but I've got another interesting one for some of you gurus out there: when I switch to a VC (ctrl-alt-F1 for instance), and go back to X, I get a complete kernel lockup. Ctrl-alt-sysrq-I doesn't do much for me even then.

Here's what portage --info gave me:

Not so much here... Bitstream Vera Mono in particular at small size, the space between letters is screwed, and so letters overlap each others....

I re-emerge the fonts... nothing, I restarted X, restarted xfs....nothing.

Any ideas ?

@Goeland86
Are you using vesa-tng by any chance? I had an issue in previous kernel versions where switching back to the term would make the screen flicker and resize for a bit then either lockup, crash or work after a few minutes. 2.6.11-cko1 was the first kernel that it started working fine again. Not sure if my issue is the same as yours :P.

GaMMa, yes this issue sounds awfully close!
What's vesa-fng? did you mean vesa-fb in the graphics support in the kernel config menus?

I'm using 2.6.11-rc4, vanilla sources...

I'll try updating my kernel and seeing what happens. Thanks for the info, I thought it was an xorg issue.

Has anyone tested the new nvidia driver (7167-r1) with xorgs dlloader-flag? It's mentioned that the new driver supports it.

Thanks,

GaMMa, follow-up: I tried both with vesa-fb and vesa-tng (finally found what you were talking about in the kernel config), and still no go. I use gentoo-dev sources now though, we'll see what happens, I've lost the habit of switching anyway.

Looks as if Xorg-x11 6.8.2 is now in the stable tree in Portage. I just emerged it (along with freetype) and it looks to me as if the anti-aliased fonts look a lot crisper and cleaner. Haven't tested 3D acceleration yet but will do it and I'll post as soon as it's done ;) Thanks to the guys at X.org for making things work so well :)

I think it roughly coincided with upgrading to 6.8.0 that from that point on xfontsel doesn't work. Does anyone else have that? I start it from the shell, my system starts freezing, top reports that X pretty much uses all spare cpu cycles but no window comes up and I have to kill the process to regain control of the system.

blech...

so 6.8.2 seems to have made everything all happy and fluffy again. i get so used to gentoo just doing it's job, that i forget what a pain in the ass things can be when they don't just magically work like you thought they would. still curious to know if it was the new nvidia-kernel/nvidia-glx or the x.org 6.8.0/6.8.1 that was causing the problem. whatever it was, it sucked.
