With disabling sound I mean disabling sound in .wine/config, not in the game, BTW. I found that jack and arts sound work quite well.
But since wine has quite a negative impact on I/O and sound performance, it might well be that the game performance as it is now is as good as it gets on your machine. Perhaps it would be a good move to try to fiddle it to work with cedega?

Thanks for the help... but I can't make it work. Nor with wine, nor with cedega. I've tried to run de setup with both cedega and wine but still nothing. This time some anoying InstallShield related bug. My last resort will be to install BG2 to my brother Windows PC and the copying over the whole directory. This worked with ToEE (Temple os Elemental Evil) wich suffered from the same InstallShield bug. So, fingers crossed... ;)

If this doesn't work I'll give this ebuild another shot and probably disturb you all even further!!

Cheers,

ok. I'll start messing with the configs now. thanks anyway for getting me this far. having THE MOST BESTEST game on earth on my computer and atleast somewhat running will save many boring moments later on.

how do I make this motherbitch run in proper full screen mode? now the gnome menus just stay there and block a part the screen making spellcasting and skill using somewhat annoying at times.

btw. I found out that winex 3.3.2 should be able to run the installer. and the latest version of cedega should be able to run the game then. I might have to try that to see if I can get better performance with cedega. it's decent now too though but I'd like fully working audio.

I can't figure out why on earth would transgaming put out updates which break compatibility with some games.

In KDE, I use

Code: Select all

kstart --ontop --fullscreen bg2
to run in foreground and fullscreen. Maybe there is a 'gstart' in gnome?

Nice ebuild Voltago :D

Is there any way to make this depend on cedega instead of wine?
'cus I run an amd64 box....
I have tried to change the KEYWORDS to amd64 but it doesen't compile unshield, have'nt tried wine yet... don't think it would compile either.

Hm... maybe... you could try to play with the variables beginning with 'WINE_' in your ~/.bg2/config. I do not own cedega myself, and since BG2 is supposed to be supported by cedega (but cannot be installed due to some InstallShield problem), I really don't see why I should do Transgaming's job _and_ pay for it, so I don't plan to actively support cedega. But if the setup is similar to Wine's it should not be too hard to get it to work.

http://gemrb.sourceforge.net

It is still under development.

I looked into GemRB and all it would take it to run with my game install is a way to make it look for lower-cased filenames only. But it's not quite there yet, so I didn't dig into it very much. And thanks for asking, I kind of float rather than walk. Cosmocratic technology is a fine thing, you know. (Anyone who doesn't understand the last bit, don't try to.)

Cosmocratic technology is a fine thing, you know.
It surely is. Although the Baolin-Nda had their part in it, so it is not real cosmocratic(do they even have their own technology? i doubt it, all is from porleyters, baolin-nda, and these horses). And how does it feel to be "mighty"? This ship of yours is truly a bit oversized for one "person", although not for the task.

Yet you can save a lot of money for socks and shoes.

Maybe gemrb will make it to a point where i can take my infinity engine games out again, and struggle with vampires, goblins, golems, not to mention Irenicus, Ravel, the (white, red, red, black, shadow) dragon, Sarevok, Amelyssan, Demogorgon and others. I did beat them all, only iwd2 was a bit too, well, different, the rules did not comfort me, the graphics were cool (really), but i think a baldur's gate-like game with these rules first would have motivated me even more to play iwd2.

I did recently try to build gemrb, but it wouldn't finish, maybe python 2.4 is not usable. So i could not test it.

Not quite. 'The Temple of Elementary Evil' is also Infinity-based. Thanks for the link.

Yes, iwg. I have seen this already, but never tested it, since it became an open beta only when Mr. W. Weimer decided not to continue development of this program ;) . By then i also was a bit bored by these games, if you ever have killed about 100 or more glabrezu in demogorgons prison just for the sake of dualclassing a ~level20 fighter to a level21 thief, you will know what i mean. That acid katana of Westley Weimer is surely a great weapon.

BTW, are there ebuilds for weidu, bg1tutu and the likes (even iwg/weimorph) ? I haven't read the whole thread through, so i might have missed that.

There are also some bugfixed dialog.tlks around on the internet, they also might be included. Knights Kits for BG2 and BG1 is also quite interesting, although german only.

What about dragonlancetc?

Well, to support all those mods for ie-games available is a big piece of work.

Yep, there's an ebuild for weidu and several mods, but not for bg1tutu (yet ). The fixed dialog files (from baldurdash.org, I suppose) are english only. I'll add them when I can make sure that only english users can install them (will implement this.... eventually...).

Hi, I am getting some errors during the iwd2 emerge process.

Code: Select all

...
.........
extracting: /var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1/_engine_kernel_placeholder/ikernel.exe
 -------- -------
2257 files
ishield_doinsdir: no directory found with BASEPATH=/var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1 and FILEPATH=minimum_compressed_-_english

!!! ERROR: games-ie/iwd2-0 failed.
!!! Function last_words, Line 27, Exitcode 0
!!! (no error message)
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
Edit: Whoops, that should be ikernel.exe.

Uh, could you please run

Code: Select all

/usr/games/bin/iescripts/fingerprint
This tool will scan your first install cd for some basic data and ask you some questions, package this data into an archive and display an email address to send the archive to. The provided data will help me to debug your problem. Thanks.

Oh whoops, I hadn't thought about that as I was thinking that if I didn't have data1.hdr I would need to do that. I've sent the email out now.

The program pauses for a reasonably lengthy amount of time after the bit with the 2257 files. At that point, I altered the directory from /var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1/minimum_compressed_-_us_english to /var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1/minimum_compressed_-_english. After a pretty long wait, I'd say ten to fifteen minutes, it asked me to put in the second disc.

After it said that the merging was completed, I got a few QA notices such as.

QA Notice: ECLASS 'eutils' inherited illegally in games-ie/iwd2-0

The same message repeats for multilib, infinity, eutils (again), multilib and infinity again, and then those three again, and then finally ishield.

I emerged the 20050111 ebuild (as you recommended) and then the official patch. The official patch also gave some ECLASS errors at the end, but instead of ishield it was gnuconfig (if I remember correctly, I closed my xterm a bit too fast).

I had to symlink d: to /mnt/cdrom, but it seems to be working now. All that's left right now is the lack of sound, I'll try out a couple of methods that's been listed in the thread and post again if I get things going. :D

You can ignore the QA notices, they are harmless. I wish I could figure out how to get rid of them however, but every time someone raises the question, the answer is invariably that they are harmless and we can ignore them...
Thanks for your fingerprint!
At that point, I altered the directory from /var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1/minimum_compressed_-_us_english to /var/tmp/portage/iwd2-0/work/ishield_unshield_1/minimum_compressed_-_english.
Did you edit the ebuild at this point, or did you indeed do

Code: Select all

mv /var/[yaddayadda]/minimum_compressed_-_us_english /var/[yaddayadda]/minimum_compressed_-_english
while the ebuild was executed?

I tried editing the ebuild before emerging but that didn't work. I did it the second way you mentioned, renaming the folder midway through my file manager while the ebuild was executed. Probably not the best move, no sir... :P

Anyway, keep up the good work!

I shall try. Your installation will be all right though... probably...
Oh, and to actually apply the official patch to your game, do

Code: Select all

iwd2 install officialpatch_en
after emerging it.

To all english Icewind Dale II owners willing to try my ebuilds: Hold the installation for a day or so, I have to make a new release tomorrow to fix a small bug in the scripts.

Is it possible to create an "Planescape: Torment" ebuild, or shall I try run it with GemRB?
