PalmOne Treo 600 & hotsync

I gave up on the Sidekick (The data service was down for 5 days!!!) so I swaped it for a Treo 600.
Now I understand it can sync with either evolution or kontact, however I seem to be having an issue where kpilot sees the device but nothing happens. Here is a copy of the log
08:47:43 Daemon status is `Waiting for sync'
08:47:45 Next sync will be a backup. Please press the HotSync button.
08:47:46 Trying to open device /dev/ttyUSB1...
08:47:46 Device link ready.
A tail of /var/log/mes... shows this...
Mar 10 08:47:06 io usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 18
Mar 10 08:47:06 io visor 5-2:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected
Mar 10 08:47:06 io usb 5-2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0
Mar 10 08:47:06 io usb 5-2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1
Mar 10 08:47:45 io usb 5-2: kpilotDaemon timed out on ep0in
Mar 10 08:48:10 io usb 5-2: kpilotDaemon timed out on ep0in
Mar 10 08:49:22 io usb 5-2: USB disconnect, address 18
Mar 10 08:49:22 io visor 5-2:1.0: device disconnected
So it appears that it is seeing the device but timing out for something reason. Any ideas?

Well I've tried gpilot as well as kpilot and I get the same result. It just waits and times out.

What is different about jpilot?
