Privateer Remake 1.0 now out!

  • Quote

Post by charlieg » Mon Mar 07, 2005 12:45 am

The Privateer Remake Project, a mod of the open source Vega Strike game, has announced it's 1.0 release. I've yet to play it (this news is that hot) but it's looking like a full storyline remake of the original Privateer with a host of graphical improvements to bring it into the 21st century.

Oh yeah! I loved this game back in the days. First computer game I ever got, and finished.

I have the bata version installed of the one you speak of and it is pretty nice. Most is the same as the old game except actually 3d space.

Great game; I spent a lot of time on it back in the day, and am really looking forward to playing the remake.

BUT. On my 2005.0 Athlon 64 system, it doesn't work. I run the installer, it decompresses, and then nothing happens. Back to the prompt. I told the installer not to delete the temp directory, and tried to run setup from there, and it just gave me the prompt again.

Anyone else having this problem? Is it an AMD64 issue; should I post to Gentoo on AMD64?

This is cool. I've been playing the original in dosbox for the 1st time in years. I wonder if the remake can read the saved game files.

No, post to the Vega Strike forums as the VS devs do not frequent here.

Hmm, only an ebuild-request in http://bugs.gentoo.org

An updated Linux installer is now available. Xan, this should fix your AMD64 issues.

I've got this in my TODO list... but unfortunately, that entire list is behind #1... "Release 2005.0"

Okay, just for the record, no it didn't, but it got closer than I've come before. The game pretty much workd, but the commodity and ship merchant areas were empty. Can't get far in the game that way!

Sweet! I had absolutely no idea about it and I love this kind of game. I'll have to check it out.

You need to raise that issue in the Vega Strike forums.

You have to click on the blank clipboard surfaces in both areas to get to the actual trading screen.

Thanks, but that's not it... I get to the screen, it's just that there's nothing there. I've posted to both the Privateer forums and the Vegastrike forums. I also had an email conversation with Bobby Z, who's taken the first crack at an ebuild. We couldn't find the problem, and I have a fairly standard configuration with all the emul-* libraries, so it looks like an upstream issue.

Thanks for all your help, guys. And I'm glad it's working for the rest of you! It looks like fun.

Just FYI, I got it working, thanks to hellcatv over at the Vegastrike forums. Just had to use the new installer's vegastrike binary, but everything else from the normal installer. Thanks for all your help, charlieg.

ebuild doesn't actually install anything due to permissions problems

Can you please describe it in more detail? I am having similiar issuses (actually even more then), I have no cursor (not sw nor hw, and there is no choice in setup), and half of the screens at bases are not drawn at all.

What was the solution for you? Cause Im also on amd64 2005.0 profile.
Update: Oh, here is it: vs forums, just in case people have similiar problems.

I wouldn't say that it's working just yet. It's 99% there, at least, but there are still a couple of showstoppers. I've been going back and forth with GlaDiaC, whose Loki installer binary I've been using, to try to get it resolved. Thread here: http://www.liflg.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1266.

Basically the problem is that I can land at Oxford, but I can't go to the main campus or even re-launch. I can move the mouse around, but there's no place that's "hot". I have to kill the program.

New Detroit worked at one point, but now once I get to the main street there I'm in the same boat.

I even tried starting over, thinking I had triggered a bug in the saving system somehow. I got just enough by trading to buy a jump drive, tried to land at Oxford, and nothing. Does it work for you?

As the vega strike lead devel, I know a lot about why hotspots might disappear when landing on a vegastrike world
I could certainly help you if you can post the contents of the stderr file (or mail it to hellcatv *atsign hotmail.com )
specifically the part about traceback and error would be useful (from python)

to get stderr into a file do the following

commandtorunprivateer >& ~/myfile.txt

then e-mail myfile.txt to hellcatv *atsign hotmail.com when things go awry

remember *atsign = @

Update: hellcatv has resolved this for me with a small change in some of the Python code. The patch has been applied to the codebase.
