Where are my SATA disks? (amd64 amd64-universal livecd)

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Hi,

I am trying to install Gentoo on my AMD64 with SATA disks.
I am using amd64-universal-2004.3 CD image, the machine boots
but then there is not /dev/sd* device.

Thanks in advance.

This is my "lspci" output.

I had the same problem while installing my new amd64 system: the liveCD did not regognize my sata chip (via k8t800 use to work with linux but not here...)

Is the module "via_sata" (or "sata_via", don't remember) loaded?? if not modprode it and see if /dev/sd* arre created. This solution didn't work for me as devices were not created, so to install my system i used ubuntu amd64 liveCD (8O) and it solved my problem.
Good luck!!

Well, i'm trying to install gentoo 2004.3 amd 64 version on my two sata raid0 controlled by the VIA 8237 (on ABIT AV8 with K8T800Pro), and after having loaded the sata_via module it not only recognizes the two disks but also the single array disk.
Unfortunately it cannot see the windows partitions, but i'm working on it :D

i just spent far too long upgrading from kernel 2.6.5 to 2.6.9
original install was with 2004.1 I think. two SATA disks (raid0) on VIA8237. and the old 10G IDE disk with win98 on it for old time's sake.

the reason i spend far too long on it was that for the last year my disks have been at /dev/hde and /dev/hdg (using the old /dev filesystem, which i don't think a 2.6 kernel should have been), but the new kernel called them /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. when i finally got past that hang, the boot stopped and told me i had to install Udev, which i had been swinging along without for a whole year.

so have a look in your /dev, and see if the drives have been called something else. i think the via drivers are still changing, the new ones might even recognise the onboard raid. anything could happen.

getting sata to work

when you boot gentoo from the livecd, press f2 at the boot: prompt, and type:
gentoo noapic

then once gentoo is loaded, you type:

modprobe sata_nv (or sata_sil, sata_sis), depending on your motherboard.

then sda should appear in /dev

Yes, it works.

I followed rucs_hack's suggestion (noapic, then modprobe sata_via) and it worked just fine.

Thanks

I've got an ASUS A8V Deluxe (K8T800Pro) which also has a VIA 8237 Controller. My system is configured with two 120GB SATA HardDisks striped in RAID0. I've made 3 partitions form scratch, the first one to Windows XP, and then two for Linux and Linux Swap (using Partition Magic)

After loading the sata_via module (modprobe sata_via), I can find both my 120Gb hard drives in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. HOWEVER, linux is seeing them as separate disks. Where can I find my single array disk??

Looking forward for a quick answer... Can't install Gentoo without this ;-)

Thanks in advance!
