Greetings all,

I'm setup & running with apparently one of the quirkier hw configs

AMD64 Gentoo 2004.3
Linux kernel 2.6.10 (latest)
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
BFG Technologies GeForce 6800GT 128MB
KDE 3.3.2

when I try to use artsdsp

Code: Select all

artsdsp -m ./et
I get an error that looks like this:

Code: Select all

./et: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/kde/3.3/lib/libartsdsp.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
this happens for any command passed to artsdsp with any argument.
I've upgraded with

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~amd64 emerge arts
and I get the same error.

any ideas?

I have the same problems when running Skype with the wrapper.

Do you really need the artsdsp? I run Skype without it now and it runs just fine.

AMD64
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
KDE 3.3.2
Kernel 2.6.9-r14

yes this problem also happens with skype

"need" is a strong word.

it's more like this: (for example)
a couple nights ago my friends and I were on skype, and we decided to kick up a game of quake3 for old time's sake. they (windows users) were able to have sound from both skype and quake3 at the same time, I however was not (it didn't help that for some reason quake3 sound is currently broken, but that point is moot)

also, if kde is playing sounds while cedega is loading, then cedega doesn't get control of the sound card and counterstrike complains about not having a sound card, I then have to quit, run artsshell suspend, and try again

still haven't been able to figure out the cause though.

aRts takes total control of the sound card is the reason for not being able to play more than one sound at a time. If you use aRts for sound then you will only be able to use what is aRts compatible to get sound. The more popular way AFAIK is using the alsa mixer called dmix. There is wiki howto on how to set it up. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix. You will need to do #killall artsd to allow another mixer to gain control of the sound card. Also you can have aRts go into suspend after 2 seconds as another alternative.

I believe the error is caused because there isn't a 32bit library that aRts can use. I'm trying to figure how to fix that error now. so I can't help you there, sorry.

Thanks, I will look into dmix when I get home, so am I right to understand that if this works I can abandon arts & esd alltogether?
