System voltages

  • Quote

Post by pmaciolek » Thu Feb 10, 2005 9:53 pm

Did anybody tried to check system voltages when X's were freezing? I've seen somewhere that it may be related to power supply problems.

In my case, my box voltages are fine, except strange -14.91 V read instead of -12V. AFAIK -12V seems to be rather not important (+12V is) and I suspect that this is just false read. Anyway, I'm going to change the PSU...

Wise piece of advice: don't trust your sensors but instead rely on a voltmeter since the sensors may be off/bad.

Tried updating xorg to 6.8.2. Disabled acpi. No dice.

My network settings are a bit messed up but I managed to login with ssh and the X was using all of the cputime.

i fixed my hard lock - i was compiling my kernels with the clock tick speed set to 200HZ - it seems that was causing my crash as 500HZ works just fine Hope you all get yours sorted too.

just as a note xorg upgrade didn't fix my issue either

No more freezes since a while...

  • Quote

Post by Zentoo » Tue Feb 15, 2005 10:42 pm

Hi !

I've follow this thread some weeks ago after have same symptoms and so many crashes.
I have no more crash actually but cannot be sure why because i installed so many different
kernel since. But i think that have stopped since i've tweak my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
So there is the relevant part of my xorg.conf.

I actually have a Geforce 4 5700. gcc 3.4. xorg 6.8.2 but it's really recent and last nvidia driver (unmasked ones)
I remember when i play with transset and xcompmgr, that i could not launch an open GL API a long time ago.
So i think this problem is something between xorg-x11 with Composite extension and GLX API...

Though I've not had any crashes since 6.8.2 upgrade of xorg, thought I'd give it a go, too! Let's see how we get on...

It would take me as long as a freeze takes to tell you it hasn't worked, but up to a month or even more to say that it has worked, because I get occasional freezes, not regular, predictable or even forcible!

I did most of your changes but not "dri" as nvidia specifically says not to. Also my LCD screen has an analogue interface, so I adjusted for that, but otherwise we'll see how we get on...

I thought I'd post a rundown of the problem I had, maybe it'll help someone. I havent read the entire thread but I had the freeze where the screen would lock but the mouse would still move(not sure which type that is). This started happening when I upgraded my GF3 to a GF 6600gt. It would happen usually 5-10 min after X would boot up, but sometimes longer. I tried literally everything from kernels/config to xorg configs etc. In windows the system wouldnt lock up but on occasion the screen would shut off for a second then come back on.

After about 2 wks of agony searching the nvidia forums, I realized that the problem was that my computer was overclocked. I completely forgot about that since it'd been that way for 3yrs now. So I downclocked it and haven't had a problem since, windows or linux. My guess is that the new video card just eats up too much power for the system to be overclocked, but I dont have the funds or access to a bigger power supply to test it. Anyway I had a feeling it was a hardware issue from the start since it happened directly after a video card upgrade. I hope this helps someone.

System specs:
1.8 p4
512mb
abit th7-II
chaintek(sp?) GF 6600GT
300W PS
2-HD's
2.6.8-gentoo-r7

Mine's overclocked too, but I doubt that's the problem, because I have had about the same level of freezes as before I overclocked it. I had a few "other" freezes when I first overclocked (mouse froze as well) but adjusting a few voltages put a stop to that.

thats known as the "grip of death" .. i had countless freezes like that . actually I just had one 5 minutes ago when I was trying to get the nvidia drivers working.

when Im using the NV ( AGPGART ) driver i have no lockups or freezes or anything, as long as I don't touch the computer while the CPU is working at 100% load, if I do, I get a Hardlock INSTANTLY! (just like the good old days of WIn95)

ok so I had this problem and find this very odd.
Seem to append only in firefox for me.
I have a fx5200.
So then i turn the driver to nv and it don't freeze.
But I get poor support and no opengl. I managed to start the mesa gl one. and rebuilding my kernel to use xorg-x11.
but now xine freeze if i get it full screen and gxine plugin in firefox freeze at splash screen. not very usefull.
I have installed mplayer and realplayer, in the hope to get somthing of a plugin in firefox to watch movie on the web. particularly .mov. which gxine was doing well.
So as i understand the problem is the nvidia drivers?

Hmmmm... I just changed my apm_bios udev perms from 0600 to 0666, so let's see what happens when I try and use APM support :). I wouldn't doubt that bad perms were at fault in my case for the freeze :(.

Having a locking good time ...

This thread has been here for a while!!

I love it when I'm trying to show my friends how great linux is and then bam I get a nice lock (X frozen, mouse still moving). "...blah blah so stabl... hmm I seem to have crashed!" Try and sell that!

For me however, I ALWAYS get this lock in firefox while I'm scrolling down a webpage. I get it about every other day on heavy usage. My system is booted daily (laptop).

Please someone solve this!!! This lock and suspend are the two barriers I have left to my quest for the ultimate OS!

SMP kernel 2.6.10-r7 gentoo-dev-sources
reiserfs
acpi, (no APM at all)
cpufreq scaling in kernel
SMP support (for my hyperthread p4 3.2 Ghz)
preemtive.
xorg6.8.0-r4
nvidia video
intel chipsets

The problem on my laptop is NOT related to X, and NOT related to Nvidia.

I've had random crashes, even before the framebuffer console loads (during initial kernel load)
I've had crashes in a console login.
I've had crashes when the console blanks. Disabling that with setterm -blank 0, seems to help the lock during console blank.

The live cd did not seem to crash, and i've checked the difference - the livecd loads the kernel with the acpi=ht flag (just enough acpi to load the SMP)

The same problems were exhibited on my ~x86 instalation, so it cannot be attributed to particular package.

THE ONLY COMMON THING WAS THE KERNEL AND THE HARDWARE!

Having said that, it seems the problem is with the kernel - same kernel was ran on both the x86 and ~x86 installation on the same laptop.

For the ones that insist on X-related crashes, yes - i've also experienced crashes under X with mouse freeze/ no mouse freeze, also crashes during X initialization AND/OR exit.

sadly, crashes continue...

p.s. I bet on an MS conspiracy against the linux community :)

Get rid of your power management in the kernel altogether, or look into possible IRQ mapping issues and how to fix them (there are patches for some systems, ie Dells out there...).

Also, be sure to submit a bug report to the kernel.org people.
