Notebook setup to minimize GPRS traffic

  • Quote

Post by necromncr » Mon Oct 04, 2004 1:11 pm

I have a Gentoo notebook (*yeah baby!*) and I'd like to run GPRS on it. Because I will need it quite often and no other internet access will be available, I'd like to minimize my traffic. My GPRS is billed @ traffic rate.

My first thought was squid and perhaps some sort of dns caching proxy but squid seems like a huge program for a notebook (i'd like to spare some battery time also). I found dnsmasq, maradns and pdnsd in portage. Ad blocking would be nice too (via somekind list of regex'es).

My question is, what is your opinion on such matter? Am I shooting in the wrong direction here? What would you do?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Server Proxy?

do you have a reliable server you could connect to via GPRS? If you put a proxy on that server to do heavy compression on your downloads. combined with a good local DNS cache, your GPRS session will appear faster, and use less bandwidth.

That is how my palm PDA works over GPRS. there is a proxy that palm runs that strips down webpages and resizes images. I'm not sure exact what software you'd need to do this though.

Resizing images, khmm.. good idea! I bet it could be done easily with squid.

You gave me some great ideas, thanks!
