Help: First Time Installing Gentoo [solved]

Its my first time installing gentoo and i encoutered a LOT of problems..
I rebooted and started the installation again from new.
Now i want to do everything right and be assuered that what im doing is right.

So my first question where im stuck:
for a Athlon 1400+ system which is the best stage-3 tarball for it ?

X86 or i686 ?

Type the command uname -m at the prompt. If it says i686 then go for the i686 stage.

I hope what i did is right .. gonna check after the tarball is installed..

Im standing in front of a "problem" again..

Im now at the point where i have to choose which kernel sources to choose..
i got a athlon 1400, choose reiserfs for my root filesystem and wondering which are the best sources to choose from...

actually many people had problems with 2.4.28-gentoo-r5 read it here:

.. and i had the same error

so i thought i should maybe choose a diffrent mirror this try ...

gentoo is moving to 2.6 line kernels, so i will most certainly recomend eithor gentoo-dev-sources or development-sources. i use vanilla 2.6.10 at the moment, the latest stable, and love it

2.4 line is generally a bad idea unless you have a specific reason for needing it

just wanted to choose the regular gentoo-sources..
you changed my mind //im going for gentoo-dev-sources

O.K. i got another question: Im quite confused by the USE variable in the config setting :
I used the USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde alsa cdrom dvd" but my question is do i HAVE to use the USE variable in the make.conf script or is it just an OPTION ?

The USE flags in make.conf are optional. There are nice defaults if you do not define any yourself. See the defaults plus any that you set with the command emerge info
