Kernel Panic - Raid1

  • Quote

Post by adelante » Tue Feb 01, 2005 1:35 pm

I get this error when I boot the system:
VFS: Cannot open root device "902" or unknown-block(9,2)
Please append a correct "root" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,2)
in my /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/sda
image=/boot/bzImage
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/md2

in my /etc/fstab i have:
/dev/md0 /boot ext3 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/md2 / reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/md3 /usr reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/md4 /var reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/md5 /home reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/sda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sdb3 none swap sw 0 0
What can I do about this Kernel Panic, i tried the tutorial with grub, and i got the same error...

1) Make sure that the resierfs support is compiled in your kernel. It can't be loaded as a module.

2) Make sure that the drivers for the raid controller are compiled in your kernel. They can't be loaded as a module.

I use make menuconfig to create my kernel. Items identified by a * are compiled in the kernel, items identified by a M are modules. Change the M to a * and recompile the kernel.

3) also make sure that you have md support included statically in the kernel

Hey guys

thanks for the reply.

to my knowledge, i think all that stuff is compiled into the kernel, but i will go recompile the kernel today and let you know what happens.

thanks again.

I recompiled the kernel, and double check my fstab, lilo.conf, raidtab, everything, and now i get this error:
md: Autodetecting RAID arrays
md: autorun...
md: ...autorun DONE.
ReiserFS: md2: warning sh-2006: read_super_block: bread failed (dev md2, block 2, size 4096)
ReiserFS: md2: warning sh-2006: read_super_block: bread failed (dev md2, block 16, size 4096)
EXT3-fs: unabnle to read superblock
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=md2, iso_blknum=16, block=32
UDF-fs: No partitions found (1)
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,2)
Anyone help please :(

You could try to post us your raidtab. It sounds like either a filesystem error or a raidtab config error.
Anyway you can also stop using /etc/raidtab configuration, replacing it with the mdadm suite, a modern replacement for raidtools
