Gentoo & VidaLinux reviews

Hello everyone. Thanks for a great forum with lots of useful information. This really is one of the best communities I've seen on the net so far.

I've written articles about my personal experience with Gentoo and VidaLinux and thought I should at least post the url:s here:

Gentoo: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/djst/arc ... 07352.html
VidaLinux: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/djst/arc ... 07427.html

While I absolutely love the Gentoo, VidaLinux realizes the implementation better in my opinion. But I'm glad I tried Gentoo first, because I wouldn't know as much about my system had I installed VidaLinux right away.

Just to let you know... Porthole was created and developed on gentoo systems. Vidalinux is just making use of it in their default desktop. As far as I know we have not received any help or patches from any vidalinux developers. Also if you check the version number you will see that it is still quite early in it's development. It initially started out as a package browser only and has grown quite quickly. There is quite a bit of work yet to be done for it to be what I consider quite complete.

Otherwise I thought your reviews were reasonably good.

Yes, I realize that Porthole was created by Gentoo developers. As I said, I prefer to use the emerge command instead as Porthole needs more work (and a better name ;)). What I like about VidaLinux is essentially that it allows you to get started within an hour instead of within a week. But I would probably not appreciate it as much if I hadn't tried Gentoo first.

i jumped onto the gentoo bandwagon by using vidalinux. that was 6 months ago. the thing with vidalinux IMHO is that a lot of stuff was broken. i mean to emerge certain wireless coponents, the symlink was there, thus ceatinga prob.. i know that i can easily create one and i did but unfortunately vidalinux didnt cut it for me.

i am currently on gentoo with a reiserfs installation, which is blazing fast. i have recommended vidalinux to my bro, as he is impressed with gentoo linux and wants to give windooze the ditch.

but vidalinux has one good thing about it, that is the time to installa stage3 image directly onto your hdd. however there are alot of steps to be taken before your system is perfectly working.

with gentoo, i mean what can i say, the success of the forums, and gentoo as a distro speaks for itself

GENTOO rox...
