Doesn't ksmoothdock have an option to hide the kicker while it's open? I thought that most things that 'replace' the kicker had an option to hide it for just these reasons.
Edit: I tried for myself, and ksmoothdock doesn't have this option. If you look at the screenshots on kde-look, you'll notice that the kicker is still there, but they hid it off to the side, so it's just a little button on the top left. Note that it's possible to make this button as small as 3 pixels wide, so you'll barely see it.
Alternatively, you could try moving your kicker to the top and using the menu widget to make yourself a Mac OS style menu-bar setup. I use a kicker panel this way myself, and I think it's quite enjoyable.
Finally, you could suggest to the ksmoothdock developer that he add an option to hide all kicker panels while ksmoothdock is open. I know I've seen karamba themes that do it (I want to say
this one can do it, but I'm not totally sure), so it should be possible for ksmoothdock as well.
However, the kmenu is a component of kicker, I believe, so it's not accessible without kicker running currently (I just tried killing kicker and even kdesktop won't pop up a kmenu like I have it configured to do, so kicker is necessary).
They don't have a good bathroom to do coke in.
