Cable/Network card configuration problems

  • Quote

Post by ninja » Mon Feb 10, 2003 12:40 pm

I’m trying to install gentoo 1.2 on a HP vectra vli8, I’m using the kernel module 3c59x for my onboard network card so far the machine boots up brings up eth0 and loads dhcpcd with no problems. I have complied and configured bpalogin (a login client for Australian Bigpond cable customers) as I have always done in the past, but when I try to ping a website I get the following

Code: Select all

ping –c4 www.rmit.edu.au
PING www.rmit.edu.au (131.170.40.30): 56 octects data

--- www.rmit.edu.au ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
any ideas?

thanks in advance

ps I’ve tried a ifconfig –a and everything there seems to be fine there

DNS seems to work...
might be a dumb question, but have you tried to ping anything else - because the site you stated is apparently blocking icmp request...
you won't get replies from www.rmit.edu.au even if your connection is perfectly set-up...

Are you behinde a firewall? The card is getting to the outside world because the name is resolving

Code: Select all

PING www.rmit.edu.au (131.170.40.30): 56 octects data
have you tried anything else, besides ping, like lynx?

just asking, cause i had this problem before with a setting on my own router not allowing pings.
