What is automake?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

automake is a tool for generating nice, GNU-style makefiles. Most software packages use it. Portage uses the automake software itself whenever a package comes with source that does not already have the pregenerated makefiles (e.g., CVS snapshots).

Automake is the GNU Automated Make system.

It is a core system package that enables the automated (system independent) compilation of source code.

Probably pulled into world because you have another development package in it.

Yes, wonderful....but can someone comment this:

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b# emerge -va world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild UD] media-video/dvdauthor-0.5.0 [0.6.10] 0 kB
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r1 [1.0.6111-r3] 0 kB
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r1 [1.0.6111] (-multilib) 0 kB
[ebuild U ] media-video/nvidia-settings-1.0.6629 [1.0.6111] 0 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.13 433 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-devel/autoconf-wrapper-2 0 kB
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r6 [2.59-r5] 903 kB
[ebuild UD] sys-devel/automake-1.5 [1.8.5-r1] (-uclibc) 514 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r2 (-uclibc) 647 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/automake-1.6.3 (-uclibc) 465 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/automake-1.7.9 (-uclibc) 564 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/automake-1.4_p6 (-uclibc) 366 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-devel/automake-wrapper-1 0 kB
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/automake-1.9.4 (-uclibc) 734 kB
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/libtool-1.5.10-r3 [1.5.2-r7] (-uclibc) 2,636 kB
[ebuild UD] x11-misc/superkaramba-0.34 [0.35] +arts -debug -doc +xinerama 0 kB
[ebuild NS ] media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.8_rc1 -debug -doc +oss 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 7,265 kB

Do you want me to merge these packages? [Yes/No] Interrupted.
Why would it install automake in maybe all available versions? Im quite confused....

EDIT: I found out this all is related to libtool, looks like it depends of it in some way...

Seems like you answered your own question, then.

Can someone explain this:

Code: Select all

[ebuild UD] sys-devel/automake-1.5 [1.8.5-r1] (-uclibc) 514 kB
I believe it's saying "1.8.5-r1 is no good, so I'm downgrading to 1.5".

1. Why/who/how is determing that 1.8.5-r1 is not good? This version is "stable" across the board: http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?automake-1.8.5-r1

2. Who/why/how decided that 1.5 is a suitable replacement for 1.8.5-r1?

Thanks for your help, just trying to understand.

Chris
