libstdc++.la not found - fix_libtool_files.sh failed

When I try to compile gtk+ I get the following error:

/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[4]: *** [libpixbufloader-tiff.la] Error 1

I know this is a known issue. fix_libtool_files.sh failed to help though, so I downgraded back to GCC 3.3.4. Same problem.

I discovered that the problem in the directory it's checking isn't just 3.3.4 vs. 3.3.5, but i386-pc-linux-gnu vs i686-... (I have i686). I've been searching the forums (and spent many hours rebuilding my system after failed compiles screwed it), but I haven't found an answer. Anyone have some advice?

BTW, when I restored my system I didn't do a clean install, I unpacked a stage3 tarball and did emerge -e system, then copied over backups of key files from /etc (like /etc/fstab). I don't know if that matters - if anything old is messing things up. At least my system is up and running again (for the moment).

Well, ehrrrm... I just made a symbolic link:

ln -s /usr/lib/gcclib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5 /usr/lib/gcclib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4

I don't know if this cause any future problem but my gtk+-2.4.14 compiles now.


Oooh..sorry. didn't notice that you had i386 instead of i686. Then my solution will not help.

fixed everything. It figures that of all the threads I looked at, I missed that one. Knowing that little fix two days ago might have saved me many hours of recompling everything. Now I feel stupid.
