x resolution doesnt stay(solved)

OK I had gentoo back in March and had this problem, after getting a new hard drive for a while I didn't install gentoo. I installed gentoo again and have the same exact problem.
The resolution in XF86Config-4 does not stay. OCCASIONALY I will get the right resolution. It will always use the right resolution if the computer has been off for a long time. Sometimes it will work if I change any random setting in XF86Config-4 and restart X. But this will only work once. If I logout, restart, or shut down I get dropped to 640x480. After that I have to wait a long time with my computer off if I want to get the right resolution!!! This has absolutly been driving me nuts! It's like a voodoo curse on my box or sumthing! Has this never happened to anybody before?!?

The first thing I'd suggest is dumping XFree and moving to X.Org's X server, you can do this by emerging xorg-x11. Once you do that, configure your xorg.conf file and see if your problems go away. If not, post up your xorg.conf file and I'll take a look.

I am using xorg it uses the old config files perfectly fine, and I know it has nothing to do with me using xfree config files with xorg because I had the same problem before there was an xorg.

Ok, could you post the config file and logs then? I just thought you were using XFree since you gave an XFree config file and made no mention of the fact you were actually using xorg.

I just used xorgconfig to make xorg.conf and now the resolution seems to be ok but I'm afraid to stop x in case I get stuck with 640x480 again lol.

PS: fglrxconfig is crap

I've never had a problem with fglrxconfig, but I'm glad you got things working. If you have the problem again, please post your config and logs if you want any further help.
