where to find xorg.conf

hello everyone,

I'm running KDE 3.3 on Gentoo (kernel 2.6) and I'm wondering where i'd find my 'xorg.conf' file.

I forget where I put it, and 'find / -iname ' xorg.conf ' does not return anything.

maybe I named it something different, I don't know.

xorg.conf should be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 8 19:41 xserver

That's where it should be. I can't guess where the hell YOU put it. Good luck finding it. ;)

is it possible that it doesn't exist, or that it could be named something else?

how would I find out what config file X is using when it starts up? I checked the xorg.log file under /var/log and it didn't say.. or maybe i wasn't looking hard enough.

here's my xorg.0.log file

Yeah you're getting the same thing I am. Xorg just works without an xorg.conf. However to make a change you have to create one and do all the settings.

If you did save it somewhere, you eventually can find it with this

Code: Select all

cd /
grep -R "^Section \"ServerLayout\"" *
This will take a lot of time as each and every file will be scanned by grep.
If you didn't do any special configs, it may be quicker to recreate a config!

I think a nice explanation of what you're looking for can be found with this command:

Code: Select all

$ man getconfig

Two suggestions....

Did you upgrade to xorg from xfree? If so, xorg might be using XF86Config or XF86Config-4 (I think!) instead of xorg.conf. It will use those if it does not find an xorg.conf. You can just

Code: Select all

mv XF86Config xorg.conf
if you want. The other suggestion is to run xorgconfig, a script which will create an xorg.conf for you.

Well, from the directory listing, there's the sample config (xorg.conf.sample) file in there that you can edit and save as xorg.conf, or you could just run 'X -configure'.

An xorg.conf doesnt get made for you, you have to create your own one through one of 3 ways:
Use xorgconfig or xorg -config to generate one for you, or
Using the xorg.conf.example, write your own one.

To locate a file:

Code: Select all

# find / | grep xorg.conf
You must be root to use this command. Just use the filename (or a part of the filename) you are looking for after grep.

Hi,
I will just add some other elements to the elements presented above. (So the answer is "You have to create your own xorg.conf" ...)
I moved from XFree to xorg some times ago, and everything worked perfectly well.
I performed yesterday a "emerge --sync" followed by "emerge -au world" and it seems that there was an xorg update but I am not sure of that...
When I rebooted my computer, Gentoo was unable to start the X server.
I tried to several modification in xorg.conf without any success.
Then I removed all the configuration files in /etc/X11
The result is below :

Code: Select all

# ls -l /etc/X11
total 112
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 jan 23 00:54 app-defaults
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1582 jan 23 16:41 chooser.sh

drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 jan 24 23:00 rstart
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 aoû 3 04:32 serverconfig
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 déc 11 21:27 Sessions
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 932 jan 23 16:41 startDM.sh
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 aoû 3 04:32 starthere
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 déc 24 08:40 sysconfig
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 déc 10 08:55 twm

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root    24 jan 23 16:47 X -> ../../usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 jan 24 23:00 xdm
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7750 déc 2 02:49 XftConfig
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 aoû 3 00:08 xinit
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root    21 jan 23 16:47 xkb -> ../../usr/lib/X11/xkb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 842 oct 27 10:05 xloadimagerc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18899 jan 23 16:41 xorg.conf.example
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 aoû 3 00:08 xserver
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 aoû 3 00:08 xsm
and then after a reboot....the X server worked perfectly well again
WITHOUT any configuration file in /etc/X11
How can you explain that ?
Is there somewhere another config file ??

Weird isn't it ?

Code: Select all

$ man xorg.conf

In the man page, it lists a bunch of directory locations that are searched for the file xorg.conf.
This configuration file is searched for in the following places when
the server is started as a normal user:

/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/usr/X11R6/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/usr/X11R6/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/xorg.conf
/usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4
/usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf-4
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf

X.org has a feature wherein it will run without a configuration file, probing for the correct variables. See:
