No Sound in NWN

  • Quote

Post by alexleiker » Wed Jan 12, 2005 4:52 pm

I just emerged NWN and got it up and running but for some reason my sound is not working. I have had sound before in NWN but that was on a previous install. Also another thing I am wondering is how do i change my resolution and change the texture quality. I know on windows I can have 64mb textures and the game looks really good but on linux it isnt so. Is their specific commands i have to do to change the settings? I have treid using the option menu but it doesnt seem to actualoly take effect. Any help would be appreciated

I *think* that if you change the res you have to exit and re-enter the game. Could be wrong. One thing I'm sure about though is that the game does support higher than 1024x768 res in Linux, but you have to modify your xorg.conf to also be able to display those modes.

Dunno about the sound. Make sure you're in the games and audio group? *shrug*

Try setting

Code: Select all

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=artsc
(if you're using arts)
or

Code: Select all

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=esd
(if you're using esound)
or

Code: Select all

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa

in your nwn startupscript. IIRC you must use your Systems SDL-Library instead of the one NWN provides.

Well the wierd thing is that my NWN audio worked after I re -emergered it. Also after some snooping around in the NWN directory I took a look into the nwn.ini (or something file) and it had the options there. So all is good for NWN.

MSI K8N Neo4/SLI

In what file is:

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa

It's not in my nwn.ini and

grep SDL /opt/nwn/*.ini

produces zilch!

its not in a file, its a variable that is set.

$ export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa
$ set | grep SDL_AUDIODRIVER

Why an RC-Script? Just put in your nwn-Startupscript. If your're using nvmovies it is possible, that you won't have sound in the movies or in the game, because the sound-device is already in use. To solve this, you can use a sounddaemon like esd or arts, or try to set up dmix. Search the NWN-Forums on the Bioware-Website for more information.

mv lib to lib.old in your nwn directory, so it uses your systems libSDL. Fixed it for me.
