Onboard AC97 Sound

  • Quote

Post by Gulliver » Wed Feb 05, 2003 9:32 am

Hi all,

I have a problem with the onboard sound of my MSI K7T266Pro-R.
I have a SB Live! 5.1 working with the kernel-drivers in my system. Now I want to also use my onboard soundcard. I added the VIA-sound module to the kernel and activated the card in BIOS. In kernel log I get this message, regarding the onboar-card:
kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: \203\204v8(SigmaTel STAC9708)

No more, no less. SB Live! still works fine, but there are no additional devices for the onboard-card.
Can someone give me a hint, what is wrong here?
Many greetings from Germany,
Julian

i have an asus k7m.
in ami-bios, i think there you've the choice between onboard sound & settings and soundblaster settings.
both must be enable.
next compile the ac97 not as module, but rahther "inbuild" kernel.

think about, that you've th recompile your modules after builing your new kernel. ( such as alsa-driver, nvidia i.e.)
with regards

Nope. The bios settings only enable a sounblaster emulation for old dos games and like. I'm pretty sure you don't wan't that :-).

Did you read the alsa-install-docs? did you add the proper lines to your /etc/modules.d/alsa ?

Yes, it is possible. I had a SB Live! and the onboard VIA 8233 (Asus A7V8X) going, but one caveat is that I was doing it using OSS drivers purchased from 4Front, not the ones provided in the kernel. Haven't tried it with just the kernel drivers (I don't believe the 8233 is supported yet, so the point may be moot there). I've heard ALSA supports it, but I haven't ever tried it.

Gulliver - what VIA sound chip do you have? From what I've read, the 82Cxxx is supported by the kernel but the 8233 is not.
Another fine missive from Slyvr

Use alsa. Refer to the Gentoo Alsa howto. The driver you want is 'via82xx'. I have ALSA-OSS emulation enabled too, works sweet.

Ok, first thank you for all the help.
Can I proceed using the SB Live! with the kernel driver and only use ALSA for the onboard card? Because the SB Live! seems to be better supported by the kernel-drivers.
Many greetings from Germany,
Julian
