/dev/hda3 (root) not found on first boot?

Well, My second attempt to install Gentoo has run a-ground as well. I have everying this (I think) installed and did my first boot. below is the error I received.

Code: Select all

Mounting sysfs at /sys
Can't create lock file /etc/mtab~979 : Read only file system

Failed to open the device /dev/hda3 No such file or directory

Warning... fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hda3 exited with signal 6

File system couldn't be fixed
I can boot with the LiveCD and mount the system. I can also do an fsck on /dev/hda3 from the LiveCD and everything looks good. I checked that the kernel had support for ReiserFS compiled. I also noticed that on boot /dev/hda is found. Then again, grub boots up fine as well.

I also checked my fstab and both noatime and notail are listed for all reiserfs partitions. I don't have it with me but I can post it later if needed.

Any help here would be great! I would love to have a working system for at least a week or two before my computer goes obsolete.

Thanks,

PhilD

You compiled it into the kernel and not as a module right?

i am having a similar problem, in that on first boot of a new install using udev and reiserfs gives me a "root partition not found" error. I can boot from a cd and mount the partition in question, and reiserfs is compiled into my kernel, not compiled as a module.

I also get the same error messages as PhilD.

It was.

I figured out my problem.

I was using udev, but I was under the x86 arch, not the ~x86, so my versions of baselayout, udev, and sysfsutils, and all dependencies of those three programs, were too outdated.

I added those three, and their specific dependencies to my package.keywords file with the ~x86 descriptor, and re-emerged, and the next boot went perfectly.

I had the exact same problem, I added:

Code: Select all

app-shells/bash ~x86
sys-fs/udev ~x86
sys-fs/sysfsutils ~x86
sys-apps/baselayout ~x86
sys-libs/readline ~x86
sys-apps/sysvinit ~x86
now to reboot.. /* time lapsed */ and it works!

thank you kiel.wells for your effort and posting the fix. I would not have found this on my own

I'm using the same board and having a completely different problem: When I shutdown or reboot the computer doesn't come back up. I get power to all fans and the machine, but it doesn't boot. I have to flip the switch on the psu for about five seconds then power it back up in order for it to turn on. Did you guys run into this problem?
