grub problem on SATA on AMD64 computer

  • Quote

Post by cbrands » Sun Oct 31, 2004 6:21 pm

I read somewher that grub might have reisefs issues
so I repartitioned the drive and now have

sde1 /boot ext3
sde2 swap
sde3 / reiserfs

and rebuild gentoo

I use the following grub.conf file

Code: Select all

default 0
timeout 30
title=Gentoo linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/ram0 init=linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sde1
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-gentoo-r1
when I type

Code: Select all

grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/sde
I get the following error

Code: Select all

/dev/sde: Not found or not a block device
:(
I really have no idea what to try next other than yell for help.

Thanks

Yes, I'm sitting with him now, that's all we've been trying to use. It has no (hdX) drives at all. We are able to mount it (/dev/sde).

Code: Select all

grub> root (sd [tab]
Error 23: Error while parsing number
naa, sd doesn't seem to do it at all. I'm researching how to manually put in grub now. Thanks again for your assistance.

Trying:

Code: Select all

grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/sde
/dev/sde: Not found or not a block device
I've been reading all over the forums and it seems that these same problems are repeated, but there are no solutions. Maybe manually installing grub would work best... :?:

Alright, I figured out something... after chrooting and trying to install grub to /dev/sde it just won't work.

I tried:

Code: Select all

livecd / # /mnt/gentoo/sbin/grub
and it was able to detect an hd0, so something with chrooting and/or mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc must have messed it up for some reason that I don't understand at all.

After rebooting I can get to a grub shell.

for grub, first hard disk is hd0, wether sata or not.
I'm surprised by sde, this would mean that your / is on your 6th sata drive??? sometimes depending on your kernel version and your driver, sta disks are sda (for example 2.6.* and nvidia sata) or hde.

Morover, kernel over 2.6.5 seems to have non compliant sata_nv driver with nforce3. try to use this kernel first and let'see after if you want an up-to-date kernel.

did you emerge grub-static? instead of just grub?

if not, read the amd64 release notes.

and if you reboot your pc and you get that grub menu, just run the install commands again, ie

Code: Select all

root (hd0,X)
setup (hd0)
quit
(where X is your boot partition)

and reboot
Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer!
