I'll count the seconds, but should I wait for the ebuild or install the original from ATi? :?

On the release date only one thing matters (to me): where's the download link?
I would even install a lousy RPM manager if that helped to get my hands on them sooner.

Seriously, I think ATi had enough time to produce an installer that doesn't screw up your system.

It seems that there is already an ebuild for the 8.8 fglrx series (if you know where to look). There also appears to be some patches for the 8.8 fglrx driver already hitting portage (I think that is what those 8.8 patches are).

I don't think that the installation process for the new ati driver is that much different than for the old driver. In the past I have just changed the version number in the old ebuild file name to download fglrx releases that do not have a new ebuild file in portage yet. You may be able to do that with this release, too. Although, now that I think about it the new ebuild should support multiple archs because there will be two new rpms, one for x86 and one for amd64!!!

Regardless, if there is not a new ebuild in portage when the drivers come out on Monday, then I'll try to remember to post the 8.8 ebuild that I have after some testing.

Well, what about that testing? We're growing impatient here!

BTW: It's already the 17th here, so where are those drivers? :)

Heh, better than waiting for the xmas presents :-) it's 1:12 am here, I hope that drivers are here before I finish reading book.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes or should I?

Nothing yet, still the old ones for XFree86 4.x. I do think they will come out today or tomorrow, we'll just have to wait some more before we get a chance to crash our PCs with these new drivers.

I did sign it.
And I paid 150 dollars (or 250) for this card and it's a good card and it worked fantastic under Windows.

Well my radeon 9200 se with xorg 6.7.0-r2 in my desktop as higher performance then radeon mobile 9700 under Windows XP in my laptop ...

Don't know how but it's true ...
and my desktop is slower then laptop ... Desktop is 32b and this is 64b. Both Amd processors so that is not a fact that aati work wonderfull under windows, it is not true in amd64 native ...
