su: doesn't work

Hi,

I'm just doing my first steps with GenToo Linux after I dropped my Mandrake installation. While strictly follwing the installation instructions, everything turned out to work out of the box.

But - and this really bothers me - I can't use "su" to temporarily switch to my root account. su first asks for the password and then always complains:

"su: Permission denied
Sorry."

I emerged strace and tried to find, why su stops with this error mesage, but I couldn't find anything. Does anyone else can give me a hint?
