A PCI sound card and the motherboard one at the same time ?

A PCI sound card and the motherboard one at the same time ?

  • Quote

Post by IvanYosifov » Sun Jan 16, 2005 5:21 pm

Hello guys,

I need to have two soundcards. I have an intel8x0 in the motherboard , so ( as per 1+1=2 ) I bought a second one - namely Audigy LS. However after installing the audigy ( no chnages to kernel/bios ) the intel8x0 has simply dissapeared. It no longer shows in lspci.

The current lspci is http://yosifov.net/ivan/lspci.cur
The old ( before installing Audigy ) lspci is http://yosifov.net/ivan/lspci.old

The BIOS on-board sound option in "Integrated peripherials" is Auto/No , set to Auto. It seems the BIOS is disabling it ( as per , "Who needs the onboard , when there is a PCI ?? " ). The mother board is GIGABYTE GA-8IPE-1000-G , chipset is i865.

The question : Is it possible to use a PCI sound card AND the onboard one at the same time , and how ?

Thanks.

It seems that in your case the answer is no. I find it surprising that the BIOS does not have an option to explicitly enable two sound cards, Linux is certainly capable using two sound cards and I imagine that Windows would be as well.

I would try another pci slot first, and if that didn't help, try fixing the pci card's IRQ . Does the onboard sound come back when you take the pci card out again?

Well , I suppose it will come back , since it worked before sticking it in. Sorry I can not try it right now ( computer sealed , warranty... ). I will contact the dealer moday or tuesday. Assuming it did not help , how do I "fix the IRQ" ?

in the bios there should be an option to choose the IRQs manually..

Well until you take it out again, you won't know if your on-board sound has been screwed in the process.. first rule of fault-finding

In "Integrated Peripherials" the IRQ options are:

Serial Port 1
Serial Port 2
Parallel Port
CIR Port ( disabled )
MIDI Port

In PnP/PCI ,they are:

PCI1/PCI5
PCI2
PCI3
PCI4

That is all in my bios that deals with irq's. Dont seem sound related though , apart from the MIDI-one , will try flippin' it and see what happens.

I called the vendor... he has no idea what can I do , also thinks the BIOS is disabling the onboard audio. Looks like I'll be buying a new PCI sound card about 22.01 ( Saturday ) , so if any of you has any tricks left up the sleeves , now is the time to share them :/

Well... as long as I don't remove a sticker ( can't open without removing it ) if anything malfunctions ( disk crash , dead cpu , burnt power... ) the component is replaced for free. Unfortunately I doubt it covers dumb-motherboard-design limitations , or dumb-bios-behaviour.
