Cobalt RaQ 3/4 Kernels

Cobalt RaQ 3/4 Kernels

I thought I would post a link to some of the work I've done on the Cobalt RaQ 3 and 4 servers. I'm able to run gentoo on them beautifully with a new 2.4 kernel.

I have a bunch of stuff available at http://imbezol.criticaldamage.com/linux/cobalt

What you want to do first is upgrade the ROM on the server (if you break it don't cry to me :) )

I've used a couple different ROMs but I'd recommend the 2.10.1-1M.rom that I have in that directory.

You can then use the patch on my site for the 2.4.28 kernel. It can be applied to a stock 2.4.28 kernel. We've had some luck applying it to the gentoo-sources too but it will require a little messing around as it doesn't apply cleanly. To make the patch I took the original Sun provided patch for a 2.4.20 kernel and fixed it several times to apply to more recent kernels. I've run this on production servers and it has had no problems thus far.

When you install your kernel use

cp /usr/src/linux/vmlinux .
bzip2 vmlinux
mv vmlinux.gz vmlinux.old.gz
cp /usr/src/llinux/vmlinux .
gzip -9 vmlinux
mv System.map System.old.map
cp /usr/src/linux/System.map .
Once done the install is completely normal. The only thing you really _need_ to do to save yourself nightmares later is remember to add a serial console before you try to boot off it so you can see what's happening.

Other than that everything's normal. devfs works fine, the nics are solid (unlike with the default cobalt install under which they just stop responding under heavy packet count), there are numerous tools for the lcd that will show system info, init script info etc (the ones in portage suck), and you have a great little server that is now much more secure.

Why 2.4? I spent about 8 hours merging the patch I made for 2.4.x into the 2.6.8.1 tree. I've tested it with 2.6.9 and it works. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=225557

We need to update them for security reasons and we have a thousand of them in production. We can't afford to play with 2.6 while it's still "BETA."

You said it was beta in your own post. Further, have you tried dropping it into a running Cobalt distro? The 2.4 kernels I made are running the Cobalt Red Hat distro. The Gentoo boxes I have running them are only for amusement.

As this is the Gentoo discussion forums, I saw no reason to put these kernels into the Redhat based linux that comes with the Cobalt.

I recently install debian to my raq and that worked perfeclty the problem i have at the moment is that i download the stage3 build stage3-x86-cobalt-raq3i-2.6.10-01-2004.3.tar.bz2, i created three partions on the hard drive /dev/hda1 which is 30 meg and ext2 /dev/hda2 which is 500 meg and swap and /dev/hda3 which is ext3 and 29 gig. I then mounted /dev/hda1 to /boot on had3 and untarred the archive i then editted /ect/fstab and change to this to equal this but when i boot the raq i get a kernel panic as below.

i have played with the fstab and i cant figure out why i get a kernel panic as ext2 and ext3 are built into the kernel.

Well, you're not even making it out of the first stage kernel (which loads the real kernel), so the problem probably lies in where your /boot partition is. Try this...

Hit <space> on boot (from a serial console) to enter "ROM mode".
Type boot and hit <enter>.
Then do help and hit <enter>.

There is an option for setting kernel parameters, set these to root=/dev/hda3 console=ttyS0,115200.
Also, there is a setting for boot device/partition, make sure this is set to /dev/hda1.

That should help a bit.

Ok, the stage3 tar.bz2 you downloaded from me does not have a prebuilt kernel. It does not have a cron daemon or logger already installed. If you want to this to work pretty much "out of the box", you'll have to grab one of the other two files (the ones with ReiserFS and XFS support). Keep in mind, these files are set to work with RaQ 3's and 4's. These require you to extract them and make a few changes. Like so....

Assuming your install is mounted at /mnt/gentoo
cd /mnt/gentoo
wget http://www.serialexperiments.us/cobalt/ ... .3.tar.bz2
tar -jxvpf stage3-x86-cobalt-raq3i-2.6.10-01-reiserfs-2004.3.tar.bz2
mv stage3-x86-cobalt-raq3i-2.6.10-01-reiserfs-2004.3.tar.bz2 root/
vi etc/fstab
Edit the fstab to reflect your partitions and mount points
ifconfig eth0 IP netmask netmask broadcast broadcast
echo "nameserver dns_server" > etc/resolv.conf
chroot . /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
emerge sync
nano -w /etc/conf.d/net
rc-update add net.eth0 default

Add a line above the 127.0.0.1 ... that is:
127.0.0.1 hostname.dnsdomainname hostname
Replacing hostname and dnsdomainname with their respective values

passwd
Set your root password
exit

Now just umount everything and you should be good to go

Keep in mind that you do need the LCD support in the kernel.

emerge it and the app is called "putlcd" It takes two args, one for each line. sooo....

putlcd "line one here" "line two here"

The quotes are needed to keep the args seperate.

I have the same problem with the lcdutils 0.2 on the Cobalt 3 and 4 machines here. I also found the one from the cobalt install works properly.

Theres also a cobaltfp project on sourceforge with a clean lcd interface. Its the one i tend to use.

Errggh, sorry about that. I just uploaded the tarball for cobaltfp to its sourceforge project. For some reason I thought dweeber already added into cvs, guess I was mistaken. It should be in CVS too, but for some reason its not showing up. Im gonna look into that next.
