unable to sync palm with gnome-pilot

Hi all

I just installed evolution with gnome-pilot to sync my palm.
But I just can't get it to work.

Syncing with J-pilot and K-pilot works fine but gnome-pilot simply can't find the palm all I get is a time out on the palm after a few minutes.

Starting gnome-pilot manually only shows following output:

bash-2.05b# gpilotd-control-applet --cap-id=1
** Message: No pilot userid/username information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot id/username, assuming unset
** Message: No pilot cradle information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot cradle info, assuming unset
gpilotd-Message: Activating object OAFIID:GNOME_Pilot_Daemon

** Message: No pilot userid/username information located

Also in /var/log/messages nothing unusual appears (except that nothing appears at all):

bash-2.05b# tail -f /var/log/messages

dumb question, but did you actually configure the gnome-pilot tools with their nice little GUI configuration thing? It can't seem to find your setup info

no dumb question at all, that's where I actually have the problem.
I can't run the set up becaus gnome-pilot tools can't find the palm.

In the step where it wants to retrieve the information from the palm it simply doesn't do anything.

Regards Daniel

Hi,

when it is a serial device you must change the overtime
("Zeitüberschreitung" sorry i am a german) to a higher number like 8.

That has solved the problem for me. Good luck.

i fixed this by first killing the gpilot daemon and then trying again.

kill `pidof gpilotd`

that worked for me.

I'm having the same exact problem. I can connect to my palm device using pilit-xfer -l, but when I try to setup via gnome-pilot it just does not find the device. I try increasing the time out, and I tried killing gpilotd. still no go

i managed to sort out the problem eventually.
this is the steps i went though:
1. kill gpilotd daemon
2. open up the gnome-pilot program
3. follow the steps - you dont even need to press hotsync before it tells you to, just make sure that the pilot is connected and turned on. (that is, with a tungsten t5!)

hope this helps. i can only seem to be able to sync my contacts though, not my calendar. i install programs with jpilot. i transfer files just by turning on 'drive mode' on the palm device and gnome detects the 'mass storage device' automatically!

I hope I'm not out of line resurrecting a thread this old, but I've just been having a problem that had the same symptoms but (apparently) a different cause.

If you're trying to use a USB connection, then gpilotd lies -- it may say, for instance, "Watching Cradle (/dev/pilot)", but what it's actually watching is /proc/bus/usb/devices for a device it recognizes to appear. So here's something you can try:

Connect your PDA and start HotSync. Then read /proc/bus/usb/devices and look for your device in the listing. Here's mine:

Code: Select all

T: Bus=03 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=03 Cnt=02 Dev#= 76 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0e67 ProdID=0002 Rev= 0.01
S: Manufacturer=Fossil, Inc.
S: Product=Wrist PDA
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 2mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 4 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=visor
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 16 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 16 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=03(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=84(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
The important line here is the P: line. The hexadecimal Vendor and ProdID numbers are what gpilotd checks. With the new versions of gnome-pilot, you can edit /usr/share/gnome-pilot/devices.xml to add your own device. The line I added was:

Code: Select all

<device vendor_id="0e67" product_id="0002"/>
The problem is, devices.xml isn't tagged as a config file, so whenever gnome-pilot gets emerged you'll have to put your changes back in.

Sorry if I'm being weird. Had a long day of troubleshooting.
