eth0 recognition problem

  • Quote

Post by hamayya » Thu Jan 13, 2005 4:59 pm

When I type
#ifconfig eth0
I get an error, saying no such device........
I use a Real Tek ethernet lan card..and I beleive i compiled the kernel for it * i mean genkernel did it),as I see a via-rhine.ko in the list of modules.....

Can some one please explain how i can get back my lan card detecetd?I am a newbie to gentoo and kernel compilaiton.so please give me explicit list of commands....
TIA

What do you mean when you say that you see it in the list of modules? Is this from running lsmod?

Are you certain that this is the right module for your ethernet card? If your network card is detected automatically when you boot the live cd, you should boot that and run lsmod to see which module is loaded for your ethernet card. Then you can make sure that the correct module is compiled with the kernel and loaded at boot time.

Try this:
ifconfig -a
To see if there are any interfaces at all.
lspci -v or lspci -v | grep Ethernet
'assummin' its a pci or built controller'
will list pci type devices your bios found.
Put results together with the response you get when ya execute this:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 status
(your network if start script)
So--
physically there?
driver there? (I would double check that via-rhine is right driver, If your using a Via motherboard it probably is right)
is it configed?
OK??

#/etc/init.d/net.eth0 status

#/etc/init.d/ne.eth0 start

Hmmm... not quite sure what to do here. Make sure that the /usr/src/linux link is pointing to the right kernel tree. And try:

Code: Select all

modules-update
then try to modprobe again. Does that change anything?
