Problems installing UT2004

  • Quote

Post by kaega2 » Tue Dec 28, 2004 3:47 am

Hey everyone

I'm trying to install Unreal Tournament 2004. I think my problem is fairly simple.

When I start the install it gets to the point asking for the second disk. I insert the second disk and click ok and it will ask for the second disk again even though I can see it mounted on the desktop.

Thanks

The fact that you see it mounted on the desktop is whats causing the problem. Your automounter is mounting the cd in a different spot than where the ut2k4 installer is looking for it. Just unmount the cd on your desktop and click continue. The installer should find and take care of the rest.

Alright, I tried that and you were definitely right, but it's still not working.

When I don't mount it and watch the terminal screen in the background, it says

mount: No medium found
Mounted device /dev/hdd
Unmounting device /dev/hdd

It repeats that pattern every time I click "ok" on the prompt that I've inserted disk two.

I'm pretty sure that the first line is my primary cd drive which I don't have a cd in

I had the same problem. Just copy the linux installer from the 1st cd to your hard disk and run it on the hard disk. Then you can swap the disks properly.

I did try copying the installing to my desktop with no success. I didn't know you could emerge UT though. I'll try that next.

Thanks

Just an FYI, I had some major problems with installing and running ut2k4. It turned out to damaged media in the end, although the problem was harder to find in windows than linux.
Atrai will not replace your media after 90days or even allow you to buy replacements at a discount. So if you can, get on that quickly.

You may want to try alternative media if you have access to it (friend's, or internet). You can point emerge to the mounted iso easily enough.

I found it useful to `dd if=/dev/cdrom of=ut2k4-cd1.iso` to create the image files. Then just use emerge to install. This allowed me to figure out which cd was erroring and correct the problem by just replaceing the bad iso file in the set and then (re)test it quickly. Doing it with images saved alot of time reading from the cdrom. Finally, I burned the replacement iso and then I had a complete physical set again.

Hope this helps (if it's the media)

Good luck!

Be sure to copy the installer.sh to the hard drive, and have a second window open so that you can mount or umount as necessary.

With this in my /etc/fstab -

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,user,ro 0 0

-- I have no issue. The installer unmounts the disk, you just put in a new one, let the drive spin 3 seconds, and click continue.

Real real problems will begin when you try to run the game, as something is very wrong with how Nvidia support is handled in Gentoo. The emerged drivers don't work, and the work of the Nvidia installer is ignored in Gentoo set-ups. If you get it working at its proper speed, please tell me how.

Whacked out. I have the same game, on the same hardware, crawling in Gentoo, but blazing in another version of Linux.

I don't think the problem is with gentoo. It's more like a problem between chair and keyboard, since the the drivers work well for everyone else.

With a little more detailed description of the problem it would be definitly be easier to help you.

Wow.

And this arrogant petulance is why people will run away from Linux with hands over their nostrils. Why game companies and video card drivers may invest time and resources elsewhere.

I actually gave you praise on another thread, because of your suggest regarding re-emerging glibc and the linux headers.

How the hell do you know "everyone else" is fine with the drivers? This is the supportive, engaging discussion board of which I've heard so much?

Guess I'll go back to any of the 3 other operating systems running on the machine, if I want to enjoy the game at its best.

*smile*
Good job, lad.

In fairness, you did rip on nVidia support in the first place, when it is true that most people do manage fine.

What's the problem you have with the nVidia drivers?

Also, it doesn't really matter that portage ignores the nVidia driver installer, as doing it the way the ebuild does amounts to pretty much the same thing. Anyway, if it doesn't work for you then just use the installer and see how far you get with that.

Don't be such a drama-queen. ;)

Okay, I'm sorry that I was a little snappish. I'm always happy to help and I'm certainly not arrogant. But when you come here stating that it's Gentoo's fault that the drivers don't work for you, that's most likely not true. That's a lesson I learned here at the forums. Whenever something went wrong in Gentoo it was always my fault.
Maybe you use the wrong AGP driver or maybe it's something else, but as long as you don't describe your problem properly noone can help you.

If I read something like this it translates to me as: "It doesn't work and I don't want to know how to fix it - Gentoo sucks". This doesn't mean that I think Gentoo is better than other linux distributions, because I think they are are all equally good. Gentoo is just the one that fits my needs best.
If you really want to use Gentoo you must be willing to spend some time on fixing the problems you will encounter. But it's worth the time, because I learned a lot fixing the errors.
And if you are not willing to spend that time then Gentoo most likely isn't the best choice for you.
You already said, that I helped you in another thread. In the other thread you described your problem and you added the error message and I gave you the solution. That's the way it works. Edit: Okay, you weren't the guy from the other thread .Just found your thread and try to help.

But I admit I should have added a smiley to the 'between chair and keyboard' sentence.
So I say: "I apologize" - You come back here and we find a solution to your problem. :)
I can't breathe.
