unable to connect to network and LAN

I installed gentoo yesterday.While installing i had problem s with emerge --rsync but I completed the complete installation from the first stage without any errors ....I even used my lan and the net to download some source files.So,there wasnt any problem with the network.But now when I boot into gentoo.my network doesnt function.All the settings are connect.
I get the following error on typing
#/etc/init.d/./net.eth0 restart

* Bringing eth0 up(142.22.31.2)
SIOCSIFADDR No such device
eth0 : unknown interface : No such device
SIOCSIFBDADD..............DO......
ETH0...............do......
SIOSIFNETMASH .............do.....

Can someone please help me out?

You don't have support for your NIC loaded. You need to find out what type of NIC you have and best then to compile the driver as a module and modprobe it.

Can you tell how to go about it,I mean the exact procedure
I have a MSI Motherboard and via-rhine networkd(inbuilt)

If using a 2.6 kernel, go into /usr/src/linux, make menuconfig, select the VIA_RHINE driver as a module, exit, make && make modules_install, then modprobe via-rhine (or whatever the module is called).

Simple.

The required module was already selected.Anyhow I repeated the steps.
When i modprobe,i get this error...........

Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.4.52-default/modules.dep : NO such file or directory

I get the same erro even while booting the system.............
So,whats the problem.??

That's a new one on me. Try to emerge the gentoo-dev-sources, relink to /usr/src/linux, copy your .config file to the new directory and recompile.

Once you've finished make modules_install, check the modules were copied over to /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/

I have the following.........

/lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/kernel/drivers/net/via-rhine.ko: /lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/kernel/drivers/net/mii.ko

So,I think the problem lies somewhere else....

First up:

depmod -a

Then:

modprobe via-rhino

That should bring up the NIC. If not, then reboot and try to modprobe again (nice to start fresh). Once you've done that post the results of dmesg. In fact, post the results of the following anyway:

Actually the error is because ther is no such directory as /lib/modules/2.6.4.52.........
There is only one directory in that location and thats 2.6.9.......
so,I made a soft link for the same.........
Then ,I stopped getting that error...
Then (after I changed only) depmod -a went fine.
But modprobe via-rhino again is giving the error
And at boot time ,it says ......CHECK THAT YOUR .....IS ACTIVE AT /ETC/RC.D/NET..
But as I said earlier ,all the config files are ok.............

Can someone plz help?
