Depending how many kde programs you are installing. On my P II 450 MHz, 392 MB RAM, I compile arts kde-libs and kde-base in about 20 hours to one day. But I don't have any other kde parts compiling.
On my Dell Optiplex 270, P4 2700 MHz at the office, 1 GB RAM took about half a day to compile all kde.

emerge mozilla-firefox

If you already emerged X and mozilla-firefox then you don't need kde to check gmail.

Me too. I recomend to emerge kde-base and not kde. Kde-base won't install all the packages but only the usefull.

With my Athlon XP 1700+ I spend 6 hours to compile it.

And I use kdebase only, too. It's just enough.

On my P3-800 laptop with 256mb ram it took:

Code: Select all

Estimated update time: 1 day, 21 hours, 30 minutes.

according to genlop with a emerge -epv kde |genlop -p
My AMD64-3200 took about 6 hours to do the job (this was including firefox and thunderbird)

a long a$$ time :D . Do it before you go to bed or go to work. Don't start it if you're in a hurry to do something else with the box. Try to get the kdebase first, then add on the other components later.

Just finished emerging kde on an athlon-xp 2600 using distcc. Other machines are a dual Xeon PII450 and another athlon-xp 2600. Took approximately 11 hours to complete.

I remember that even on Celeron 466MHz with 128RAM it took only a few hours (around six/eight - don't know how many exactly) to emerge kdebase only. And on this, let's say, 'slow' machine the compilation wasn't so painful;P
