SigmaTel STIr4200 IRDA/USB

I bought a USB IrDA dongle in hopes that I would be able to use it to change the channel on my sattilite reciever(this is neccesary for MythTV to function), but I haven't been successful in getting it to work. I seem to have gotten IrDA networking instead of a serial port interface. Does anybody have any ideas on how I could get this configured so that I can send and recieve data to/from a remote control?

I got a /dev/ircomm0 device, and it looks like it should be a serial line with the way I have seen it used in some guides. If I say "cat /dev/ircomm0" I don't get any output there, but the irdump output changes to include "ircomm". Pointing a remote at the dongle and pressing buttons does not change the output, and lirc times out when I try to use irsend. I really want to get this working by tonight so that I can record a show on a different channel.

Has anyone made any progress on using a Sigmatel (STIR4200) USB IRDA dongle to control MythTV, etc? The stir4200 driver exists and recognizes the dongle. I even get as far as:

Code: Select all

0.7.0[8598]: lircd(serial) ready
Once I even got irdadump output (but it wasn't showing IR input, just the same 10 lines over and over again). But nothing more... :(

Messages all over the net seem to indicate various methods, kernel modules, etc. Nothing consistent, and nothing definitive.

Has anyone had any recent success? If not, does anyone have any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive replacement guaranteed to work (and doesn't require a serial port!) with MythTV ??

Thanks!
