Post by placeholder » Fri Dec 31, 2004 12:07 am

I posted about this originally in Gentoo chat, and by request I am posting it in this forum. I have hosted the howto on my website, so just follow the link below.

shutting down

Post by bludger » Wed Jun 15, 2005 2:41 pm

This looks interesting - I might give it a try.

Does anyone know how to shutdown, or reboot a system from xdm?

I'm having the same problem as gaminggeek and I'd apreciate if someone could help. And on the other note... the shutdown and reboot buttons won't show up for some reason. I think I need to emerge something but I can't figure out what :cry:

*edit1* got my buttons... I still can't bring up my WM tho. XDM just loads all over again for some reason.
*edit2* Bad GiveConsole! /me spanks it. It was corrupted so I had to fetch a new one.

My Xsetup:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# Programs to run with XDM

# Set nice background
/usr/bin/xsetbg -fork /etc/X11/xdm/pixmaps/xpoint1.png

### reboot & halt buttons
pidfile=/var/run/xdmbutton_0.pid
if [ -f $pidfile ]; then
  # Huh? Abnormally terminated?
  rm $pidfile
fi
HOME=/root /usr/bin/wish -name Shutdown <<EOF &
wm geometry . +24+700
tk_setPalette highlightColor blue
button .halt -background #c6c2c2 -foreground #9f2727 -font snap -text shutdown \
  -command {exec /sbin/shutdown -h now 2>/dev/console >/dev/console}
button .reboot -background #c6c2c2 -foreground #9f2727 -font snap -text \040\040reboot\040\040 \
  -command {exec /sbin/shutdown -r now 2>/dev/console >/dev/console}
pack .reboot -side top
pack .halt -side top
EOF
echo $! >$pidfile
###

# Start xclock
/usr/X11R6/bin/xclock -digital -update 1 &

# Take screencap
# /usr/bin/scrot -d 5 xdmshot.png &
You'll probably want to play around a bit with fonts and colours.

While I really appreciate this guide, I'm having a doozy of a time getting the font to work correctly. I've installed artwiz-fonts, and my .conf files (/etc/fonts/local.conf, /etc/X11/xorg.conf) are up-to-date, but it refuses to use the font specified.

Currently I've got:

Code: Select all

xlogin*Font: -*-helvetica-bold-r-*--12-*
xlogin*font: -*-helvetica-bold-r-*--12-*
which works, although Helvetica isn't much better than the default font.

Any help?
