Laptop network card after reboot

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Laptop network card after reboot

I just reinstalled Gentoo on a very old laptop. The previous install of Gentoo on it was getting quite old.

Anyway, the network card isn't working after reboot. During boot when it tries to turn on PCMCIA it says no sockets found and because of that the network startup fails (with an error that doesn't sound anything like what it is, but luckily I remember it from another install I did).

So, I need to figure out what kernel feature I haven't built into my kernel. Is there a way to figure out which thing I need? Or what area should I be looking in (in menuconfig)? I know very little about the hardware on the old laptop.

And yea, the network worked before (it's PCMCIA).

2.6.9 kernel

Do you know the chipset of your NIC?

Be sure you select the good one in device driver>networking support>ethernet <speed>

So many kernel options have gone on and off! AHH nothing works! :-/

The card is a PCMCIA Netgear FA511.

Did you format /boot? Delete the old kernel? There is an option in the kernel (2.6.x at least) that allows you to "embed" the config data in the kernel so you can get it back out later. Or might you have the old .config file backed up?

I know what I've said is obvious stuff and if you had an old kernsel you'd use it but maybe something there will help.
