How to use package cd

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

How to use package cd

  • Quote

Post by OLMi » Fri Dec 17, 2004 10:53 am

Hello

I have a (probably) stupid question. I installed gentoo 2004.3 with the universal cd (stage3). Because I also need other packages, like lynx, I copied the package cd to /usr/portages/distfiles for easy installing the software

but when i make a "emerge lynx" he still tries to download the package from the internet.

How can I configure emerge to have a look first in his portages tree?

Thanks

emerge everytime check portage, otherwise u cant install anything... Lynx is not in sources comes with LiveCD 2004.3, u have to download it manualy. this sources are required for after stage3 installation, and are only base.

connect to internet and than emerge lynx

if u want to use pre-compiled oackages, u have to download packagescd
If u cant give advice, dont send the helpless to the HOWTO's way or Google.com way.

Everything is clearly explained in the handbook. You need to coy every single package from pkgCD to /usr/portage/packages, or any other dir you want (check /etc/make.conf for it).
To make emerge use your prebuid pkgs you need to type:

Code: Select all

emerge -k package

No need to copy packages, just make a symbolic link from mounted cd:

Code: Select all

ln -s /mnt/cdrom/usr/portage/distfiles/All /usr/portage/distfiles/All
emerge -K <package name>
PS:
You have the right CD and everything, just pop it in and mount it, then run^.

Or you can specify PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom" in your /etc/make.conf!

^Yeah, that's much better. "export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom/usr/portage".
