Nvidia - No "real" Fullscreen in OpenGL since rein

  • Quote

Post by nervousfinger » Mon Dec 06, 2004 9:57 pm

Hi!
Since my last gentoo reinstall I don't get a real fullscreen mode in OpenGL games...
In UT2004 it switches to fullscreen and then only shows a 800x600 window surrounded by a thick black border instead of scaling the window...
I also can't change resolution in the settings...
In tuxracer and cedega it's all the same...

Can someone help me?
greets

The problem is in your X config (/etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf, depending on which you're using). In the "Screen" section for your video card, add all of the resolutions you want to the bit depths you want. Here's mine, for example. I can switch among 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 400x300, and 320x240 at 8, 16, and 24/32 bits per pixel:

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Card0"
        Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 8
                Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "400x300" "320x240"
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 16
                Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "400x300" "320x240"
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "400x300" "320x240"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I've got the same problem. What does that code in your xorg.conf mean?

it is what it looks like it is.. a list of available video modes to your X. you can use Modelinenames there too.

So X can switch freely between the modes? It's not something the user has to think about? What depth should one use?

fullscreen games or applications request a certain resolution. it has to be defined somewhere if that resolution is available etc.. so so what if a game request 1600x1200 with 250hz on your 15" digital flatpanel? it probably wouldnt work or in a worst case if the monitor is not smarkt enough would make you device implode. 80

well yeah so x can switch resolutions.. as a windows users you may find this annoying. but as everything in linux it allows you to have full control of what is happening. and of course im combination with modelines you can easily adjust resolution frequency.

well i would say get as most bits as possible. 24bit colors look much better and more exact than 16 bt. then again.. 24 bit could be slower as 16 bit.. specially on realtime 3d applications. but still i would say that you should go with 24.

24-bit color is a requirement for Doom 3, so you might as well start using it now.

Since I had little expreience with linux before I tried Gentoo my xorg was autoconfigured. How should I change my xorg such that it'll allow resolution switches?

My xorg "screen"

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device "Card0"
	Monitor "Monitor0"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
		Modes	"1680x1050"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 4
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 8
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 15
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 16
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
	EndSubSection
EndSection
*edit*

What would happen if I removed all the subsections except for the one containing depth 24?

I had a similar problem, maybe you want to play a bit with the sync rates of your monitor...
