What Macs to buy?

My ibook is a Rage 128 M3 Mobility with 8M video ram; 600Mhz; Dual USB; firewire.

I have had this thing for quite some time and am wanting another Apple laptop that has equal hardware support as this computer. What is the newest Apple portable that has equal support as my machine does?

I also sent this to gentoo-ppc-user so feel free to respond there instead.

Get a thinkpad. I have a 15 inch powerbook G4 and I hate it. OS X sucks and getting the hardware to work properly is pretty much impossible.

Everytime I hear somebody say OSX sucks, and I ask for a reason, I never get one. maybe its because Apple put together a functional, easy to use, system that never breaks and always works, at the cost of some configurability, but still lets you use a powerful UNIX command line. Perfect for most users.

i was a massive OSX hater... till i bought an ibook... i love the operating system :) its beautiful, functional, and i havent rebooted my ibook in 2 weeks... lets see you do that on a thinkpad... (considering you are running windows... as your alternative boot ) i made the assumption you dual boot it like most ibook users would :)

I don't like it because it's not linux, for the most part.

The fact that OS X doesn't have a decent music player which can stream ogg, I hate it.

As for selling my powerbook, maybe later.

wow, come on, not having an application is not a reason to hate an operating system. Its like saying I hate my house cause if doesnt have any furniture. Go out and get some furnature, or if you can't find something you have to have, build it or its your own damn fault, not a reason to hate the house you live in

One of the 15" aluminum powerbooks with the radeon chipsets will satisfy your requirements. Try to get one of the sub 1GHz machines though because the one I have has a 9600M (r300/M10) chip that doesn't have 2D or 3D acceleration yet.

ATI stopped giving out details abou their chips to open source driver writers so there are reverse engineering efforts under way. They are making slow progress though. If you don't need ultrafast 3D, get one of the 1.5 GHz aluminum powerbooks. The radeonfb driver is good enough to run X with and the 1.5GHz processor does a pretty good job with 2D even though rendering isn't accelerated.
