auto-start apps without .xinitrc (using entrance)

I used to auto-start engage, gkrellm, xscreen-saver, etc. via .xinitrc, but am now using a login manager (entrance :twisted: ).. I've skimmed over the forums for entrance, but haven't found anything yet.. anyone have an idea on an alternate way to start X apps than by ~/.xinitrc?

thanks

Hi ixion,

if your WM has nothing like an autostart-script, like for instance Windowmaker or fluxbox, you can always do the following:

in /etc/rc.conf set XSESSION="Xsession"

If you login now, ~/.xsession is executed, if it exists and can be executed.

The file could be your old .xinitrc, this should work.

This works with any DM.

Hope this helps!

I tried this, but still the apps do not auto-start. Am I doing something wrong?

Code: Select all

$ cat ~/.xsession
xscreensaver -no-splash &
engage -b "#00000000" -B "#00000000" -W 810 -H 100 -e gl -T 0 -i 1 -I 1 &
gkrellm2 -w &

Try putting an exec infront of everything:

Code: Select all

$ cat ~/.xsession
exec xscreensaver -no-splash &
exec engage -b "#00000000" -B "#00000000" -W 810 -H 100 -e gl -T 0 -i 1 -I 1 &
exec gkrellm2 -w &
