Choosing a coding language...

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Choosing a coding language...

  • Quote

Post by yakapiece » Wed Dec 01, 2004 11:45 pm

Over Christmas break I think I'm going to be coding an app or two for work but I can't decide what language I would want to do it in.

If it were for the web I'd use java or maybe python

but for a stand alone app which I'd want to be cross platform (so no VB)
what do people suggest?
Maybe QT?

I will be doing file parsing and regex.... yacc maybe :)

I know very little about python, but can you wrap that up as an executable?

C# .NET

If you need a gui then go GTK# as that's cross platform too

gtk#, from what I've read, isn't cross platform without rebuilding the source code with cygwin

so
gtk -> gtk#
is much like
C -> C# ?

Thanks for the advice

gtk# is gtk bindings for C#, so in Windows you use typical C# and WindowsForms to make apps, and in Linux you use gtk (through C# and Mono) for GUIs.
