CUPS problems (SOLVED)

  • Quote

Post by Jake » Wed Sep 15, 2004 1:32 am

I have Chaintech VNF3-250 motherboard with the nForce3 250 chipset.

CUPS installed fine and says my printer is "idle, accepting jobs" but nothing happens when I print to my LaserJet 4. When I try to restart the test page job, I get "client-error-not-possible".

from dmesg:

Code: Select all

parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,EPP]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
from lsmod:

Code: Select all

lp                      9960  0
parport_pc             24384  1
parport                37516  2 lp,parport_pc
cat /proc/interrupts

I'm using vanilla 2.6.9-rc2. "echo 'test' > /dev/lp0" does nothing to the printer and I'm sure my cables are connected. I'll try a network printer to make sure CUPS isn't broken and might work even though direct access to /dev/lp0 doesn't. The only other device I have that connects to the parallel port is a scanner and considering how difficult scanners are to setup in Linux, I don't think it's worth trying to test the parallel port.

I tried a network printer, LaserJet 8150 as I recall, over HP JetDirect and IPP, and got the same error and no test pages printed. I was able to make it print by connecting with telnet.

So do I have some kind of problem with CUPS or what? I'm just using the LaserJet drivers, can't find anything from gimp print in the list even though I emerged it.

This may not help you, but i had similiar problems with my printer and i used to get the same error messages. I used "kprinter" (obviously in KDE) to connect to my printer and it worked fine after i set it up through there. I have no idea why. I also had to mess with the permissions of the printer in /dev/ so i could use it as a normal user.

I finally solved it by following the Gentoo guide and using Foomatic. I find it strange that the CUPS web config didn't work because it worked for the same printers on my old x86 install.

I don't suppose you have a link to the fix? I have an AMD64 with a laserjet 4 and I'm having the same problem.

update: you can print to the printer manually by trying something like the following:

Code: Select all

cat - - > /dev/printers/0
and typing your test message following by control-L
and control-C

however, Cups continues to elude me.

problem finally solved. Below are the steps I followed.

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/cups stop
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge ghostscript
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge cups
etc-update
/etc/init.d/cups start
(jump on http://127.0.0.1:631 and readd your printer)
